From RHA Community Engagement Coordinator, Mary Ann Remnet:
Cybercrime is getting really sophisticated and really, nobody can
be too careful. This was one that came across my channels today, specific to my air-travel passion.
By law, companies must notify customers and subscribers of data breaches, but those who want to "look legit" often copy it - so as they say "go straight to the horse's mouth" if you want the straight scoop. Every person who
gets in the middle to tell you something, is well, in the middle. What's with that "horse's mouth saying, anyways?"
Also, changing your password, is like re-keying your front door. It doesn't do anything to protect what was taken. So be extra vigilant about monitoring your invoices (is someone using your finances?), and other
emails about other business (once someone is inside, they have several passwords and pretend to be OTHER purveyors you work may work with.)
And they aren't just stealing your bank info. Anything available online might be a piece of of someone's puzzle. And if you think that staying off the internet and social media will
prevent or protect you, don't be deceived. Sometimes the keys to your front door are sitting in someone else's computer!
The best way to protect yourself and the most important thing to know, is that YOU DON'T NEED TO B AFRAID.
Being knowledgeable and aware for what to look for, what looks suspicious, and how to proactively run your life prevents most of the intrusive violations. Plus trust your gut instincts.
Ask questions and talk about things
with your friends, families and neighbors: it's another version of "see something, say something."
And it's always good to change your passwords if you feel something is off. Just don't do it inside the email someone sent you.
