Community Calendar Rossmoor CSD Board Meeting: Tuesday, May 12th 7:00 pm Rush Park RHA Board Meeting: Tuesday, May 19th, 7:00 p.m. - On Zoom Rossmoor Red Cross Blood Drive, Wednesday, April 22nd, 9:00-3:00, Rush Park Rossmoor's Get Shredded & Food Drive, Saturday, July 25th 8:00 - Noon, Lee School
Our weather has returned to the ho-hum mid-70's for the next week under partly cloudy skies. So basically, not much to say about our weather for the week.
April Shredding Filled The Truck
Our shredding event on Saturday was amazing.
For the 2nd time in the 7 years that we have been hosting them for the neighborhood, we filled the truck and had to close down a bit early. We had more than 200 vehicles come through to drop off papers to be shredded and recycled more than 7,500 pounds of shredded paper in the process. Well done
Rossmoor.
More impressive (and important) was the over 150 pounds of nonperishable food that was generously provided by the folks that drove through. These food donations go a long way to help We Care keep local families in their homes. A huge THANK YOU to everyone who contributed food items. We will be back on Saturday, July 25th at Lee from 8:00 to Noon (or until the truck gets full) to collect your items that need to be shredded and more nonperishable food items for We Care. We also want to once again thank our terrific shredding sponsors Kelly Laird Smith with
Coldwell Banker and Patricia Megallon from State Farm Insurance who make these community shredding events possible. Both these Los Alamitos/Rossmoor based businesses are available to answer any questions about real estate or insurance. Give them a call.
Raising Money for Los Al Rocketeers
On Wednesday, April 29th from 4 p.m. until closing, Islands in Seal Beach will be donating 20% of sales to the Los Al Rocketeers when you show them this flyer. The Los Alamitos High School Model Rocketry Club (LosAl
Rocketeers) has quickly established itself as one of the nation’s top emerging programs, earning a place among the top 100 teams out of 1,107 nationwide in the American Rocketry Challenge. In their very first year, the student-led team refined their rocket through months of testing and iteration, achieving a qualifying score strong enough to secure an invitation to the National
Finals on May 16 in The Plains, Virginia. There, they will compete in a precision fly-off against the best teams in the country, aiming for a top finish and a potential spot on the international stage. As a fully student-run program, the team is currently working to fund travel and lodging for the competition. Those interested in directly supporting the Los Al Rocketeers can contribute through their fundraising page here: Los Alamitos High School Rocketry Club, helping ensure these students have the opportunity to compete and represent Los Al and our community at the national level.
The next CERT Academy will be held on Friday, July 31& Saturday, August 1 and Friday, August 7 & Saturday, August 8. This four day class at JFTB covers the 20 hour FEMA CERT course and you'll get a chance to
put those new skills to use after lunch on 8/8 in a full exercise. The course shows you real life emergency first aid and light search and rescue - exactly what you need top help yourself, your family and friends if a natural disaster hits our area. The course also helps you get prepared for keeping your family safe and fed if an emergency creates a shortage of food
or requires your family to shelter in place for a number of days. It's a great refresher even if you already have these things in place. You can sign up now for this class or if you can't
make these dates, you'll be on the list for the next scheduled academy. It's a win win
The Bright Yellow Box at Rossmoor Park
(and Why It Feels So… Rossmoor)
You could walk right past it. That’s probably the first thing to say. It’s not towering. It’s not trying to get your attention with anything
flashy. Just a bright yellow box, mounted at about eye level, tucked along the path near the community room at Rossmoor Park. Open the door, though, and it tells a different story. Neatly stacked containers. Beads sorted by color. Glue sticks lined up like they’re ready for duty. Bits
of ribbon, paper, small supplies—nothing fancy on its own, but together? It feels like possibility. This is the Craft Library, created by Adeline Okerman, Sadie Fudal, and Madison Pottios as part of their Girl Scout Silver Award project. And whether
they intended it or not, they built something that fits Rossmoor about as well as anything could. Click here for more on this story
Ron's Roses - Something Nice on Nextdoor
Rossmoor's own Ron Singer has created a group on NextDoor for those of you who like to see photos of roses and other positive images. It's created in Loving Memory of his wife, Louise Singer, who passed away on July 15, 2023 and is a terrific place to catch a respite from
what can be a very disturbing and negative social media platform. So if you want to be part of Ron's Roses, just click here or the photo above and become a member. It's free
and gives you a pretty picture on those days where that's exactly what you need to brighten your day.
How music shapes the way students study Josie Dayne, Staff Writer for the Griffin Gazette takes a closer look on how music influences studying habits.
Music can have a strong impact on studying, both positively and negatively. Listening to music while studying can help reduce stress, improve mood, increase motivation and even boost memory for some students. However, music can also be distracting, especially when it has loud beats or lyrics that compete for attention. Because
of these mixed effects, music during study time is more than just background noise — it can influence how well students focus and learn. Music has been commonly known for generating a more positive impact than a negative one. For example, while listening to music, people experience stress reduction and a lower heart rate. When studying or cramming for a test or just
trying to get “locked in,” music can help reduce anxiety and make work feel more manageable. When doing a task for a significant amount of time, music can make it feel less boring. “I don’t listen to music when studying, it makes it harder to learn and stay focused,” said Los Alamitos High School junior, Audrey Delgadillo. On the other hand, music can also distract people from tasks or affect their emotions negatively. Music can make people feel less connected to the real world and cause them to depend on it for emotional connections.
Despite music sounding good, it isn’t always helpful. Songs with lyrics can make it harder to concentrate. When needing to read, write, or memorize, the addition of lyrics. There are many types of music, some more beneficial than others for studying. According to Vaughn College, different types of music will benefit studying habits. Firstly, classical music is one of the most beneficial types of music to listen to when studying. Classical music has
fewer lyrics, creating fewer distractions. The calm tempo can help with focus and memory, making it easier to absorb information. Baroque music can help reduce stress. Lo-Fi music, with the steady beats maintaining focus and creating a good amount of background noise without pulling attention away from work. Additionally, nature sounds, with the calming background noise of... Click for the rest of the story...
