[rha]Coyotes, El Niño Watch, Halloween Photo Contest & Upcoming events

Published: Mon, 10/26/15

Hi

It looks like it's going to be a warm week for us with a slight chance of rain on Wednesday night and into Thursday morning. Overall a pretty nice week here in Rossmoor.

The West County CERT training training was very informative and the live simulation at the Los Alamitos Joint Forces base was a lot of fun. It was very warm, and still fun. All the participants and some of the seasoned veterans learn something. A big thanks to the Seal Beach Police Department and the officers from La Palma PD and Westminster PD for the insights they shared. If you have not be to a CERT training yet, it's well worth the time. You'll be more prepared for any man-made or natural disaster that may come our way. Your family and neighbors will thank you.

Rossmoor Recycles - This Saturday
This Saturday is Halloween, but before the tricks begin, please come out and treat us to your recyclable cans, newspaper, cardboard and plastic bottles. We will be at Rush Park from 8:00 a.m. until Noon to collect your treats for us. Please stop by and see us.

Emergency Prep Meeting
Speaking of being prepared, the RHA Emergency Prep Team's next meeting will be on Thursday November 19th at 7:00 p.m. at Rush Park. This is the last meeting of the year and promises to be informative. Come join us.

Coyote Sightings
As you may know over the past few months there have been sightings of coyotes in the El Dorado Park area, Seal Beach, College Park West, and Los Alamitos. Until the past week or so, there have been few sightings in Rossmoor itself. That has changed. Please follow the steps listed in the article below to keep your pets and children safe from harm. You can find out more about coyotes in Rossmoor and why you should care here.

El Niño Watch
The National Weather Service is projecting a wetter than normal winter for us in Souther California. This "El Niño" cycle typically occurs every 5 to 7 years. How much additional rainfall we actually receive of course varies during each cycle. In any case, now is the time to prepare for a wet winter by cleaning out your rain gutters and downspouts around your home and fixing any leaks you may have in your roof.

Upcoming Dates to Note
We have a number of events coming up that you will want to put on your calendar. Check them out:
  • Rossmoor Recycles - Halloween Saturday (10/31, 8:00 a.m. - Noon @Rush Park)

Coyote Sightings in Rossmoor

As mentioned above we are starting to see an increase in coyote sightings in Rossmoor. Here are some of the preventative actions you should take:

  1. Do not let small children play outside without supervision, particularly in the early morning or at night.

  2. Do not let your small pets (cats and small dogs) roam free outside, even in your backyard, unsupervised, especially in the early morning or at night.

  3. Do not create conditions that could attract coyotes or small wild animals that coyotes feed on:

    (a) Never feed coyotes or any other wild animal! Feeding of coyotes or any other wild animal is against the law (See Title 14, California Code of Regulations 251.1). Simply stated, “A fed coyote is a dead coyote,” because once they learn that humans are a source of food, they stop hunting for their native foods, become a “problem” coyote and the State is forced to kill the problem coyote.

    (b) Do not feed your pets outside or leave pet food or water bowls outside.

    (c) Do not feed wild birds, coyotes are attracted to feeding birds.

    (d) Secure your pet doors at night.

    (e) Properly secure your garbage in containers (not just plastic bags) and if possible do not out your garbage on the street the night before collection.

    (f) Pick up any dropped fruit (peaches, apricots, plums, avocados) and pick any ripe berries. If you have garden vegetables, do not let them over ripen. Coyotes love melons.

  4. Clear any dense brush from around your backyard.

  5. Install motion-activated lighting or sprinklers.

  6. If a coyote approaches or acts aggressively, throw rocks, make noise, look big, and pick up small children and pets. Do not turn your back to the animal.

  7. Notify the RCSD at 562.430.3707 or rcsd@rossmoor-csd.org  if you see a coyote, lose a pet, or find evidence of a pet kill.

  8. Notify Orange County Flood Control or the RHA of any openings in fences or under fences along flood control channels or ditches.
Most of all, if you see something report it to the RCSD. It's important that we keep the authorities updated on where and when coyotes or evidence of them appear in Rossmoor and the surrounding areas.

Go have some fun with this and your pet!

Rossmoor Walk & Talk

Rossmoor resident Bernie Beskind coordinates the weekly Rossmoor Walk & Talk  meeting at Rush Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30. That is unless it's raining, then there's no walk.

The program is simple enough, whoever attends forms groups of 2-4 people and walk around Rush Park and they talk. How long they walk, how fast they walk, and what they talk about is up to them. If you need a topic to talk about, Bernie will be happy to help you out.

It's a real Win-Win

Bernie's idea creates an informal way to meet your neighbors and get some exercise at the same time. It could save or at least extend your life, plus you'll get to meet some really great people. And that is a huge win-win.

Come join us! The Rossmoor Walk & Talk is open to all ages.

The more the merrier - Invite your friends and please spread the word. Rossmoor Walk & Talk meets are held every Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Rush Park.

If you have questions, please email Bernie (BernieB_90720@yahoo.com), or come see him on Tuesdays at 10:30 at Rush Park. Bernie will be the energetic guy with glasses, short hair, long in years and walking slowly.
