[rha] Public Health Advisory, Fall Back, Rossmoor Recycles, Halloween Contest & Upcoming events

Published: Thu, 10/29/15

Good day

It's Halloween weekend! And the official kick off for the holiday season.

What fun seeing all the kids in costume and enjoying the evening's festivities. Keep this in mind if you're out driving after dusk on Saturday. And those who are going to more adult parties over the weekend, enjoy yourselves and that extra hour of sleep you'll get on Sunday morning.

Some important items have come up this week, so take a look below for a quick overview.

Rossmoor Recycles - This Saturday
This Saturday is Halloween, but before the tricks begin, please come out and treat us to your recyclable cans, newspaper, cardboard and plastic bottles. We will be at Rush Park from 8:00 a.m. until Noon to collect your treats for us. Please stop by and see us.

It's time to Fall Back  - and get some extra sleep

Daylight Saving Time 2015 ends this Sunday, November 1 at 2 A.M. Before you go to bed on Saturday night, remember to “fall back” by setting your clocks back one hour.

This is also a great time to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replacing those old batteries every six months helps to ensure you won't hear that incessant chirping to begin when the detectors' batteries run low, and of course that they are powered up to keep you and your family safe. Home fires are the most likely disaster to affect families in Rossmoor. Let's be safe and replace those batteries this weekend.

Public Health Advisory

Invasive tropical mosquitoes have been found in Los Alamitos by Orange County Vector Control.  A thorough investigation was conducted and the presence of Asian Tiger Mosquito (Aedes albopictus) was confirmed in both locations.  The Vector Control District has deployed personnel to the City of Los Alamitos to conduct neighborhood inspections of properties for mosquito breeding and standing water in the surrounding area.  The State issued a Health Advisory on 10/14 and OC Vector Control is requesting the public report  sightings of these mosquitoes or daytime mosquito bites to them at 714.971.2421

Emergency Prep Meeting
Speaking of being prepared, the RHA Emergency Prep Team's next meeting will be on Thursday November 19th at 7:00 p.m. at Rush Park. This is the last meeting of the year and promises to be informative. We will be discussing how disaster and flood insurance really works. Come join us.

And if you are interested in seeing the video of the Emergency Prep Town Hall Meeting, you can watch this week on LATV3 (10/30 & 10/31 @ 8pm, 11/1 @ 1:30 pm and 7pm, 11/2 @ 8:30 am and 5:30 pm, and on 11/3 at 5pm). It's well worth tuning in.

El Niño Watch - Is Rossmoor Ready?
As mentioned in our last eNews letter, the National Weather Service is projecting an El Niño winter for Southern California. We've had some residents submit questions about how prepared Rossmoor is in general and where we might expect flooding if there is any.  Find out what we learned here.

Coyote Sightings in Rossmoor
As you may know over the past few months there have been sightings of coyotes in the El Dorado Park area, Seal Beach, College Park West, and Los Alamitos.

Until recently there have been few if any sightings in Rossmoor itself. That has changed. Please follow the steps listed below to keep your pets and children safe from harm. You can find out more about coyotes in Rossmoor and why you should care here.

Preventative actions you should take for coyotes:

  1. Do not let small children play outside without supervision, particularly in the early morning or at night.

  2. Do not let your small pets (cats and small dogs) roam free outside, even in your backyard, unsupervised, especially in the early morning or at night.

  3. Do not create conditions that could attract coyotes or small wild animals that coyotes feed on:

    (a) Never feed coyotes or any other wild animal! Feeding of coyotes or any other wild animal is against the law (See Title 14, California Code of Regulations 251.1). Simply stated, “A fed coyote is a dead coyote,” because once they learn that humans are a source of food, they stop hunting for their native foods, become a “problem” coyote and the State is forced to kill the problem coyote.

    (b) Do not feed your pets outside or leave pet food or water bowls outside.

    (c) Do not feed wild birds, coyotes are attracted to feeding birds.

    (d) Secure your pet doors at night.

    (e) Properly secure your garbage in containers (not just plastic bags) and if possible do not out your garbage on the street the night before collection.

    (f) Pick up any dropped fruit (peaches, apricots, plums, avocados) and pick any ripe berries. If you have garden vegetables, do not let them over ripen. Coyotes love melons.

  4. Clear any dense brush from around your backyard.

  5. Install motion-activated lighting or sprinklers.

  6. If a coyote approaches or acts aggressively, throw rocks, make noise, look big, and pick up small children and pets. Do not turn your back to the animal.

  7. Notify the RCSD at 562.430.3707 or rcsd@rossmoor-csd.org  if you see a coyote, lose a pet, or find evidence of a pet kill.

  8. Notify Orange County Flood Control or the RHA of any openings in fences or under fences along flood control channels or ditches.
Most of all, if you see something report it to the RCSD. It's important that we keep the authorities updated on where and when coyotes or evidence of them appear in Rossmoor and the surrounding areas.

Rossmoor Walk & Talk

Rossmoor resident Bernie Beskind coordinates the weekly Rossmoor Walk & Talk  meeting at Rush Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30. That is unless it's raining, then there's no walk.

The program is simple enough, whoever attends forms groups of 2-4 people and walk around Rush Park and they talk. How long they walk, how fast they walk, and what they talk about is up to them. If you need a topic to talk about, Bernie will be happy to help you out.

It's a real Win-Win

Bernie's idea creates an informal way to meet your neighbors and get some exercise at the same time. It could save or at least extend your life, plus you'll get to meet some really great people. And that is a huge win-win.

Come join us! The Rossmoor Walk & Talk is open to all ages.

The more the merrier - Invite your friends and please spread the word. Rossmoor Walk & Talk meets are held every Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Rush Park.

If you have questions, please email Bernie (BernieB_90720@yahoo.com), or come see him on Tuesdays at 10:30 at Rush Park. Bernie will be the energetic guy with glasses, short hair, long in years and walking slowly.
