[rha] Sweeper Monday, Holiday Pole Workshop Update, WinterFest

Published: Sun, 11/15/15

Hi

Have you seen the Christmas Tree lots going up all around? What happened to Thanksgiving? Well, I guess everyone wants to get a jump on the gift giving holidays.

Our annual Rossmoor Holiday Pole Workshop on NEXT Saturday (November 21) at Rush Park. The Workshop will start promptly at 2:00 p.m. with a how-to demonstration. This is a great opportunity to build your own Pole with the direction and guidance of the Scouts from Troop 188. Check out the article below for additional details.

Please note you need to PRE-ORDER your pole materials by contacting Chris Marshall via email (RossmoorLights@gmail.com) or cal him 562-598-5558. This is critical so there will be enough supplies on hand for the workshop.

It's the Third Monday...Sweeper Day
Yes indeed, tomorrow (Monday 11/16) is the 3rd Monday of the month.

Please make sure your vehicles are off all Rossmoor Streets so that you don't receive a ticket and we can help make sure all the standing water is cleared from the street gutters. This helps keep the mosquito population down and our streets looking clean.

Rossmoor WinterFest
Mark your calendars for a fun night at Rush Park. The RCSD and the RHA invite you to the Rossmoor WinterFest on Friday December 11th. Kicking off at 6:00 p.m. This is going to be a great event with arts & crafts for the kids, a bounce house, choir performances by students from both middle schools, and a live DJ.

And what WinterFest be without Santa himself along with his reindeer? That's right Santa will be there to collect Christmas requests from all the "good" boys and girls. We will also have a spectacular tree lighting ceremony at 7:00 p.m.

There will be food trucks, a screening of Elf the movie, and a holiday lights trolley tour as well. We will get you more details on these in the coming weeks. Just mark the date and start looking forward to a great evening here in Rossmoor.

Check out the details below and on the Rossmoor WinterFest website

Emergency Prep Meeting

The RHA Emergency Prep Team's next meeting will be on Thursday November 19th at 7:00 p.m. at Rush Park. This is the last meeting of the year and promises to be informative. We will be discussing how disaster and flood insurance really works. Come join us.

The Emergency Prep Town Hall Meeting is now available to watch from your computer or mobile device directly from our site. Check it out here

Sewer Smells
Recently, there have been a number of discussions in NextDoor Rossmoor about the sewer oder that seems to occur toward the north end of the tract, especially around Lee and Weaver schools.   We need your help to identify the areas most often affected by this "scent." Please see the article below and let's solve this issue.

Rossmoor Holiday Pole Workshop!

You've seen them all around the neighborhood: light posts with Christmas or other holiday or celebration swag on them. These are the now famous Rossmoor Holiday Light Poles. There are more than 350 of them in the neighborhood so it is likely there’s at least one on your block. Some folks leave them up year round, others use them for the holidays and other special occasions like graduations and birthdays.

This year’s workshop will be held on Saturday November 21st at Rush Park from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. The demonstration on how to assemble the poles will begin right at 2:00, so please arrive early. Scouts from Troop 188 will be running the demonstration and will be on hand to help you build your post. Please PRE-ORDER your pole materials by contacting Chris Marshall via email (RossmoorLights@gmail.com) or cal him 562-598-5558. This is critical so there will be enough supplies on hand for the workshop.

And, there a few tools that you’ll want to bring along with you:
  1. A fully charged cordless drill
  2. Drill bit set (specifically 1/8, 5/16 and 3/8 sizes)
  3. Standard Phillips screwdriver head for drill
  4. Regular sized manual Phillips screwdriver
  5. A pair of saw-horses
  6. A tape measure and a pencil
  7. 2" hole saw (Only bring this if you have one - it's a 1-time cut, and we'll have a few you can use if don't already have one.)
The cost for the pole materials is $70 and you can add a lighted garland for an additional $30. Please bring cash or a check to cover these supply costs.

Come join your neighbors and have some fun on what’s likely to be a sunny Saturday in Rossmoor. Please do bring along a jacket or sweater as the afternoon breeze can make things a bit chilly.

Oh, and if you cannot join us at the Workshop itself, you can order a Holiday Pole from Troop 188 and they will deliver it to your house. Orders must be placed no later than December 5th. Additional details and the order form can be found on the Troop’s Holiday Pole website: http://ChristmasLightPost.com

Sewer Smells In Rossmoor

There have been a number of complaints about sewer smells in the tract, especially in the area around Lee and Weaver schools. Rossmoor resident Brad Hakala has stepped up to coordinate the tracking of the sewage smells along with contacting the RCSD and RHA.

In response, the RCSD contacted the Orange County Sanitation Districts and had an engineer come out to check out sewer lines and determine whether our sewer lines were a problem in any manner.

Brad received a call from the County engineer who stated that there was no blockage in our lines. The engineer also tested the lines for gas leakage, and could not find anything. So, that was good in the sense that it rules out our own sewer lines. And thanks to the RCSD for their quick response to the request.

Thus far, it’s appearing that the culprit of the smell is the Long Beach Wastewater Reclamation Plant which is located south of Willow and just west of the 605 freeway. This is not scientifically definitive, but it’s appearing that this is the source of the smell. In communication with the RSD, they were fairly definitive about this, and also informing us that our sewage is handled by Orange County Sanitation Districts (Fountain Valley).
Getting this resolved is important both for the health of our residents and the school children.

If you smell any sewage, please contact Brad (bhakala@hakala-law.com) to let him know when (date and time) and where you were at the time. If you have experienced the smells here in Rossmoor in the past, please let him know where you live so he can help determine the most often effected areas.

Thanks and we will update the community as new information becomes available or you can join the discussion in NextDoor Rossmoor

Rossmoor Walk & Talk

Rossmoor resident Bernie Beskind coordinates the weekly Rossmoor Walk & Talk  meeting at Rush Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30. That is unless it's raining, then there's no walk.
The program is simple enough, whoever attends forms groups of 2-4 people and walk around Rush Park and they talk. How long they walk, how fast they walk, and what they talk about is up to them. If you need a topic to talk about, Bernie will be happy to help you out.

It's a real Win-Win
Bernie's idea creates an informal way to meet your neighbors and get some exercise at the same time. It could save or at least extend your life, plus you'll get to meet some really great people. And that is a huge win-win.

Come join us! The Rossmoor Walk & Talk is open to all ages.

The more the merrier - Invite your friends and please spread the word. Rossmoor Walk & Talk meets are held every Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Rush Park.

If you have questions, please email Bernie (BernieB_90720@yahoo.com), or come see him on Tuesdays at 10:30 at Rush Park. Bernie will be the energetic guy with glasses, short hair, long in years and walking slowly.
