[rha]Local Elections, Good Neighbors, Los Al Grads & Sweeper Monday

Published: Mon, 06/06/16

Hi

Our summer preview “heatwave” should start taking a break today and we will settle back down into the mid-70’s for a while. The “June swoon” weather transition is always interesting along the SoCal coast.

Local Elections
Yes, it’s the election season and let all of the opinions and pomp fly. Worst case it will be entertaining and the best case is that we get to have our voices heard. Especially locally.

Local Elections for the Los Alamitos School Board (3 of 5 seats) and the Rossmoor Community Services District (also 3 of 5 seats) will be held along with the general election on November 8, 2016.

Those interested in running for these important positions can find out more from the Run for Office website (LAUSD here and RCSD here). While this site is not official, it is a good place to start your research process into what it takes to run for one of these leadership positions.

The filing window for these positions is between July 18th and August 12th. Additional questions can be answered by the Orange County Registrar of Voters-Elections at 714.567.7600 or via email: rovwebmaster@rov.ocgov.com

There are some requirements for both of these boards, so if you are interested, now is the time to find out what needs to be done to get your name on the ballot in November. Get started at the links above.

Sweeper Monday!
Speaking of important dates, today Monday June 6th is not only the 72nd anniversary of D-Day (the beginning of the Battle of Normandy France), it’s also Street Sweeper Day here in Rossmoor. So, please remove your vehicles (and trash cans) from all Rossmoor streets by 8:30 AM.

Dogs, Dogs, Everywhere.
Rossmoor is home to just over 10,500 residents and many of us have dogs as part of our family. If you take a stroll around the neighborhood in the early morning or evening, you’ll see a good number of these pet owners with the dogs moving around the streets of Rossmoor. It’s great activity for the owners and dog alike. Just remember if you are one of these dog walkers, please use your leash even if your dog is friendly not every other person you see knows that and it is the law as well. And it’s up to you as well to respect Rossmoor by curbing your pooch (cleaning up after them). We all thank you.

Every once and a while a dog will get loose and run around unaccompanied. If you see a dog on the loose, please lend a hand. Even if you don’t have the time or inclination to help catch the wayward pet, by letting us know here on our RHA pet management page you can alert our Emily Knell and network of volunteers to help find the pooch. And, it it’s your pet that is lost, please contact us as well.

Rossmoor Twin Ticket Nite at the Park
Come join in the fun at Rush Park for this free summer evening event. This month's concert band is the Elm Street Band: They play in Rossmoor every year and are the community’s favorite band. They’ve been referred to as “The World’s Greatest Garage/Surf Band” and were written up in the Long Beach Press-Telegram as “the soundtrack for the City of Long Beach, playing at events all over town.” The Elm Street Band has been performing for audiences all over So. California since 1988.

Following the concert, the Disney film Minions will be shown. Come enjoy and then book our July 15th Twin Ticket 2016.

These top 10 students, according to GPA, represent a stellar commitment to academics over their entire four-year career at Los Al, and are headed to local, Cal State, UC, and Ivy League schools in the Fall to pursue a wide range of majors, including Aerospace Engineering, Economics, Biology, and Engineering.

A huge congratulations to each of these terrific students for all of their efforts.

Rossmoor Walk & Talk

Rossmoor resident Bernie Beskind coordinates the weekly Rossmoor Walk & Talk  meeting at Rush Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30. That is unless it's raining, then there's no walk.

The program is simple enough, whoever attends forms groups of 2-4 people and walk around Rush Park and they talk. How long they walk, how fast they walk, and what they talk about is up to them. If you need a topic to talk about, Bernie will be happy to help you out.

It's a real Win-Win
Bernie's idea creates an informal way to meet your neighbors and get some exercise at the same time. It could save or at least extend your life, plus you'll get to meet some really great people. And that is a huge win-win.

Come join us! The Rossmoor Walk & Talk is open to all ages.

The more the merrier - Invite your friends and please spread the word. Rossmoor Walk & Talk meets are held every Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Rush Park.

If you have questions, please email Bernie (BernieB_90720@yahoo.com), or come see him on Tuesdays at 10:30 at Rush Park. Bernie will be the energetic guy with glasses, short hair, long in years and walking slowly.

Be Aware - Coyotes Are Here
Coyotes in Rossmoor

Rossmoor Wildlife Watch

The number of coyote sightings in Rossmoor is is expected to increase in the coming weeks as the female coyotes begin to train their pups to hunt. Please be careful with your pets (keep them indoors or within your sight, and NO NOT leave pet food outside after feeding time).

The RCSD, RHA, and Supervisor Steel along with our state and county public safety agencies have developed a Wildlife Watch plan for Rossmoor. We held our first orientation meeting on 5/31 for those that expressed an interest. If you would like to be a part of our Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program and discover what we are doing and how you can help, please sign up for more information.

The coyote challenge we face here in Rossmoor and throughout Southern California does not have a magical "fix it" solution. It will take a community effort (that's you and me, not "them") to keep our pets safe and reduce the risks in our neighborhood. Please learn what you can do at your home and for everyone in Rossmoor.

We will be getting more information our to the neighborhood here and on the RHA & RCSD websites in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.
