[rha] Special RCSD Board Meeting, West Nile Virus Update, National Night Out

Published: Tue, 06/28/16

Hi

It got pretty warm and humid today and it looks like the next few days will be in the upper 80's-low 90's as well before cooling a bit for the 4th of July Holiday weekend. Stay hydrated and safe.

Just a quick reminder: ALL fireworks (yes even sparklers) ARE ILLEGAL in Rossmoor.

Why take a chance when there is a fantastic fireworks show (rumored to be the longest show in Orange County) at the Joint Forces Base right across Los Alamitos Blvd. The gates open at 4:00 PM and the entertainment kicks off at 4:15. There will be food and fun for the whole family all afternoon and the fireworks show begins at 9:00 PM. There is no admission fee (it's free) to attend. Please bring your own lawn chairs and blankets. There are no bleachers available. There is a $5 per car parking fee. All adults and minors 16 and older will need to show a photo ID to enter the base. (Note: no pets, RVs, alcohol, or firearms are permitted on the base). Get the details here
Also, remember our other upcoming Summer Events in July and August including concerts, movies and Shakespeare in the Park (Othello and Cymbeline) Get more info on these events.

RCSD Special Board Meeting
The Rossmoor Community Services district will hold a special meeting to discuss the now approved LA Fitness club in the Shops At Rossmoor. The meeting will be held TODAY - Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at 4:30 p.m. at Rush Park. The public is invited and the agenda can be found here.

West Nile Virus & Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes infected with the West Nile virus continue to spread in the western part of Orange County. Make sure to use mosquito repellant when outdoors at dusk. Get the details from OC Vector Control here.

Local Elections
Yes, it’s the election season and let all of the opinions and pomp fly. Worst case it will be entertaining and the best case is that we get to have our voices heard. Especially locally.

Local Elections for the Los Alamitos School Board (3 of 5 seats) and the Rossmoor Community Services District (also 3 of 5 seats) will be held along with the general election on November 8, 2016.

Those interested in running for these important positions can find out more from the Run for Office website (LAUSD here and RCSD here). While this site is not official, it is a good place to start your research process into what it takes to run for one of these leadership positions.

The filing window for these positions is between July 18th and August 12th. Additional questions can be answered by the Orange County Registrar of Voters-Elections at 714.567.7600 or via email: rovwebmaster@rov.ocgov.com

There are some requirements for both of these boards, so if you are interested, now is the time to find out what needs to be done to get your name on the ballot in November. Get started at the links above.

National Night Out - Old Ranch Center

On Tuesday, August 2nd, neighborhoods throughout Rossmoor, Los Alamitos, and Seal Beach are will join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the “33rd Annual National Night Out” (NNO) crime and drug prevention event.

National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by Rossmoor Homeowners Association (RHA) will involve over 16,728 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world.  In all, over 38.3 million people are expected to participate in “America’s night Out against Crime”. National Night Out 2016 corporate sponsors are ADT and Nextdoor.com.

From 6 to 8 p.m. on August 2nd, residents in neighborhoods throughout Rossmoor, Los Alamitos and Seal Beach along with neighborhoods across the nation, are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. Rossmoor, Los Alamitos, and Seal Beach will be hosting one joint event at the Old Ranch Center in front of Target.

National Night is designed to:

  1. Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
  2. Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts
  3. Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
  4. Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

National project Coordinator Matt Peskin, said “This is a night for America to stand together to promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity. National Night Out showcases the vital importance of police-community partnerships and citizen involvement in our fight to build a safer nation. On NNO, we invite neighborhoods nationwide to join us in Giving Crime & Drugs A Going Away Party.”

Rossmoor Wildlife Watch
Coyotes in Rossmoor

The number of coyote sightings in Rossmoor is is expected to increase in the coming weeks as the female coyotes begin to train their pups to hunt. Please be careful with your pets (keep them indoors or within your sight, and NO NOT leave pet food outside after feeding time).

The RCSD, RHA, and Supervisor Steel along with our state and county public safety agencies have developed a Wildlife Watch plan for Rossmoor. We held our first orientation meeting on 5/31 for those that expressed an interest. If you would like to be a part of our Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program and discover what we are doing and how you can help, please sign up for more information.

Please report any coyote sightings here: RossmoorWildlife.org/report

The coyote challenge we face here in Rossmoor and throughout Southern California does not have a magical "fix it" solution. It will take a community effort (that's you and me, not "them") to keep our pets safe and reduce the risks in our neighborhood. Please learn what you can do at your home and for everyone in Rossmoor.

We will be getting more information our to the neighborhood here and on the RHA & RCSD websites in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.

Rossmoor Walk & Talk

Rossmoor resident Bernie Beskind coordinates the weekly Rossmoor Walk & Talk  meeting at Rush Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30. That is unless it's raining, then there's no walk.

The program is simple enough, whoever attends forms groups of 2-4 people and walk around Rush Park and they talk. How long they walk, how fast they walk, and what they talk about is up to them. If you need a topic to talk about, Bernie will be happy to help you out.

It's a real Win-Win
Bernie's idea creates an informal way to meet your neighbors and get some exercise at the same time. It could save or at least extend your life, plus you'll get to meet some really great people. And that is a huge win-win.

Come join us! The Rossmoor Walk & Talk is open to all ages.

The more the merrier - Invite your friends and please spread the word. Rossmoor Walk & Talk meets are held every Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Rush Park.

If you have questions, please email Bernie (BernieB_90720@yahoo.com), or come see him on Tuesdays at 10:30 at Rush Park. Bernie will be the energetic guy with glasses, short hair, long in years and walking slowly.
