Hi
Our summer continues, and it's warm. some would say HOT in fact. Remember to water your plants and when you do, early morning is best - before 8:00 a.m. on your
designated watering days.
As you might have heard, the Seal Beach City Council upheld the appeal on the proposed LA Fitness project in the Shops at Rossmoor behind Sprouts. In a very well written note, Thomas Cripps, Secretary of the Rossmoor Park Owners Association said: After an incredibly long public
speaking session, including two breaks and presentations by the developer a decision was reached at 11:10 pm. The vote was as to uphold Rossmoor Park's Petition (to stop the health club project) as follows: Gary Miller (Dist 4) Yes, Ellery Deaton (Dist 1) Yes, Mike Varipapa, (Dist 3) Mayor Pro Tem No, Sandra Massa-Lavitt, (Dist 5) Mayor No, David Sloan (Dist 2) Yes
Thus the Council voted 3-2 to Uphold the Petition
against the health club development.
Our sincere appreciation to all who have given their support to stopping this development on the parking lot behind Sprouts. All who made donations to support an attorney statement to the Council members, deserve an extra thank you.
It was announced at the start of the general session and we believe put the Council and developer on the alert
that RPOA was serious. The City Attorney discounted the letter on the grounds a hearing delay could only be 40 days from the date of the Planning Commission approval, June 20th. So an extension of only 10 days would have been possible.
The Mayor initially limited public comments to three minutes, but since we had a six-member petition team prepared we were all given 5 mins each. The developer had his full team of experts plus impressively the chief of the hedge fund AEW/CRT from Boston,
owners of the Shops@Rossmoor was also there and spoke.
It was an impressive Q & A session with most of the Council, City staff, developers team and public all being given time to participate. This was perhaps the best of our community at work, with many RPOA residents making unexpected but significant contributions.
Our neighbors in Rossmoor Regency and Rossmoor HA also provided great
participation and have set an example for our shared future.
One note, Community Development staff had recommended going ahead with the health club project and so had not prepared a resolution for the Council to vote on last night to stop the project. So there will be a formal Resolution vote to stop the health club project at the next City Council meeting, Monday, August 8th., 2016.
So let us all celebrate this great success, but be aware we expect this will not be
the end of development issues with the Shops @ Rossmoor.
Thank you, Thomas and we agree that this process was a great example of our community of residents working together for the common good. Our thanks to you, the RPOA, the RCSD, and the joint efforts of all our residents who stepped up to be heard.

The number of coyote sightings in Rossmoor increasing. Please be careful with your pets (keep them indoors or within your sight, and NO NOT leave pet food outside after feeding time).
The RCSD,
RHA, and Supervisor Steel along with our state and county public safety agencies have developed a Wildlife Watch plan for Rossmoor. We held a team meeting last week to discuss reporting and our next steps. If you would like to be a part of our Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program and discover what we are doing and how you can help, please sign up for more information.
The coyote challenge
we face here in Rossmoor and throughout Southern California does not have a magical "fix it" solution. It will take a community effort (that's you and me, not "them") to keep our pets safe and reduce the risks in our neighborhood. Please learn what you can do at your home and for everyone in Rossmoor.
The photo below of a
coyote walking the fence line was recently taken at 8:00 AM in College Park East. It's a great example of how agile coyotes are and why feeding your small pets unsupervised, outside in your backyard is not a safe practice.

Rossmoor resident Bernie Beskind coordinates the weekly Rossmoor Walk & Talk meeting at
Rush Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30. That is unless it's raining, then there's no walk.
The program is simple enough, whoever attends forms groups of 2-4 people and walk around Rush Park and they talk. How long they walk, how fast they walk, and what they talk about is up to them. If you need a topic to talk about, Bernie will be happy to help you
out. It's a real Win-Win Bernie's idea creates an informal way to meet your neighbors and get some exercise at the same time. It could save or at least
extend your life, plus you'll get to meet some really great people. And that is a huge win-win. Come join us! The Rossmoor Walk & Talk is open to all ages. The more the merrier - Invite your friends and please spread the word. Rossmoor Walk & Talk meets are held every Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Rush Park. If you have questions, please email Bernie (BernieB_90720@yahoo.com), or come see him on Tuesdays at 10:30 at Rush Park. Bernie will be the energetic guy with glasses, short hair, long in years and walking slowly.
