[rha] LA Fitness Project Update, Summer Signature News, National Night Out

Published: Thu, 07/21/16

Hi

It's been pretty warm the past few days. Make sure you're drinking enough water. It's important to drink throughout the day for both your brain and body.

If you're planning on heading to the beach to cool off, the recent 2.4 million gallon raw sewage spill in downtown LA, may change your plans. It looks like our local beaches (Seal Beach and Long Beach) will remain closed at least another day. The initial water bacteria test results on Wednesday were promising.

Our neighborhood coyote activity and related reports are slowing a bit, although we are still getting 2-3 reports of pet remains each week. Please protect your pets by keeping them indoors or be with them when they are outside. Also, please do not leave food outside for your pets - you're feeding the coyotes too. Yes, even in the backyard - check out the photo below to see how agile coyotes really are. More info can be found here on the Rossmoor Wildlife Watch site.

Shakespeare At Rush
On Saturday and Sunday (7/23 & 24) we have Shakespeare in the Park presenting Othello and Cymbeline. Get more info on these events.

LA Fitness @ the Shops Project Update
On Monday, July 25th by the Seal Beach City Council will hear the appeal of the Planning Commission's approval of the LA Fitness project in the Shops @ Rossmoor Center. If the Council rejects the appeal the project will continue unless court action is taken. If the Council does not reject the appeal, it will instruct the Planning Commission what needs to be reviewed or altered.

Rossmoor residents are encouraged to attend and express your opinions and concerns regarding this project.

A GoFundMe account called "Seal Beach/Rossmoor Unite!" has been set up to help postpone the development and reach a compromise with the City of Seal Beach on the project. More info here.

West Nile Virus & Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes infected with the West Nile virus continue to spread in the western part of Orange County. Make sure to use mosquito repellent when outdoors at dusk. Get the details from OC Vector Control here.

Local Elections - Filing period opens next week
Yes, it’s the election season and let all of the opinions and pomp fly. Worst case it will be entertaining and the best case is that we get to have our voices heard. Especially locally.

Local Elections for the Los Alamitos School Board (3 of 5 seats) and the Rossmoor Community Services District (also 3 of 5 seats) will be held along with the general election on November 8, 2016.

Those interested in running for these important positions can find out more from the Run for Office website (LAUSD here and RCSD here). While this site is not official, it is a good place to start your research process into what it takes to run for one of these leadership positions.

The filing window for these positions is between July 18th and August 12th. Additional questions can be answered by the Orange County Registrar of Voters-Elections at 714.567.7600 or via email: rovwebmaster@rov.ocgov.com

There are some requirements for both of these boards, so if you are interested, now is the time to find out what needs to be done to get your name on the ballot in November. Get started at the links above.

National Night Out - Old Ranch Center

On Tuesday, August 2nd, neighborhoods throughout Rossmoor, Los Alamitos, and Seal Beach are will join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the “33rd Annual National Night Out” (NNO) crime and drug prevention event.

National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by Rossmoor Homeowners Association (RHA) will involve over 16,728 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world.  In all, over 38.3 million people are expected to participate in “America’s night Out against Crime”. National Night Out 2016 corporate sponsors are ADT and Nextdoor.com.

From 6 to 8 p.m. on August 2nd, residents in neighborhoods throughout Rossmoor, Los Alamitos and Seal Beach along with neighborhoods across the nation, are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. Rossmoor, Los Alamitos, and Seal Beach will be hosting one joint event at the Old Ranch Center in front of Target.

National Night is designed to:

  1. Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
  2. Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts
  3. Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
  4. Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

National project Coordinator Matt Peskin, said “This is a night for America to stand together to promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity. National Night Out showcases the vital importance of police-community partnerships and citizen involvement in our fight to build a safer nation. On NNO, we invite neighborhoods nationwide to join us in Giving Crime & Drugs A Going Away Party.”

Coyotes in Rossmoor

The number of coyote sightings in Rossmoor increasing. Please be careful with your pets (keep them indoors or within your sight, and NO NOT leave pet food outside after feeding time).

The RCSD, RHA, and Supervisor Steel along with our state and county public safety agencies have developed a Wildlife Watch plan for Rossmoor. We held a team meeting last week to discuss reporting and our next steps. If you would like to be a part of our Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program and discover what we are doing and how you can help, please sign up for more information.

Please report all coyote sightings here: RossmoorWildlife.org/report

The coyote challenge we face here in Rossmoor and throughout Southern California does not have a magical "fix it" solution. It will take a community effort (that's you and me, not "them") to keep our pets safe and reduce the risks in our neighborhood. Please learn what you can do at your home and for everyone in Rossmoor.

The photo below of a coyote walking the fenceline was taken at 8:00 AM in College Park East. It's a great example of how agile coyotes are and why feeding your small pets unsupervised, outside in your backyard is not a safe practice.

Rossmoor Walk & Talk

Rossmoor resident Bernie Beskind coordinates the weekly Rossmoor Walk & Talk  meeting at Rush Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30. That is unless it's raining, then there's no walk.

The program is simple enough, whoever attends forms groups of 2-4 people and walk around Rush Park and they talk. How long they walk, how fast they walk, and what they talk about is up to them. If you need a topic to talk about, Bernie will be happy to help you out.

It's a real Win-Win
Bernie's idea creates an informal way to meet your neighbors and get some exercise at the same time. It could save or at least extend your life, plus you'll get to meet some really great people. And that is a huge win-win.

Come join us! The Rossmoor Walk & Talk is open to all ages.

The more the merrier - Invite your friends and please spread the word. Rossmoor Walk & Talk meets are held every Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Rush Park.

If you have questions, please email Bernie (BernieB_90720@yahoo.com), or come see him on Tuesdays at 10:30 at Rush Park. Bernie will be the energetic guy with glasses, short hair, long in years and walking slowly.
