[rha] Fall Back this weekend, Coffee witha Cop, Rossmoor Crime Update

Published: Wed, 11/02/16

Hi

The coolness of fall seems to have arrived along with a few showers. It's almost like we've seen a change in seasons. Will it last? Who knows? This is after all SoCal, where we are just as likely to see 80 degree days in November as we are to get an inch of rain.

Time to Fall Back - Remember to adjust your clocks
This Sunday at 2:00 a.m. we will officially go off Daylight Savings and return to standard time. This means we get an extra hour of sleep and turn our clocks back an hour.

November Rossmoor Recycles on 11/19
The November Rossmoor Recycles event at Rush Park will be the weekend BEFORE Thanksgiving, Saturday November 19th from 8:00 AM to Noon. So collect all those boxes and papers and bring them a week earlier than normal to Rush Park

Also please note, The File Depot will not be available to collect your papers for shredding again until January 2017.

Town Hall Conversation Series
Our November Town Hall Conversation will be held on Tuesday, November 15 at Rossmoor Park with our guest from the California Highway Patrol who will highlight the CHP and how they serve Rossmoor. The conversation starts at 7:00 p.m.

Please come early as seating is limited and we expect a fairly large crowd.

Future Town Hall Conversations will include discussions with Supervisor Steel, the OCSD, and the RCSD. If you would like for us to schedule a specific topic for a future RHA Mini-Town Hall meeting, please let us know by calling 562.799.1401 or via our website

Rossmoor Crime Update
At tonight's RCSD meeting, OCSD Lt. Jeff Puckett reviewed the quarter's crime stats (you can see them here) and discussed the criminal activity in and around the flood control channels to the west and south of Rossmoor.

Lt. Puckett is a 20-year veteran with the OCSD and is Rossmoor's Police Chief. If you have concerns, please contact him via email (jtpuckett@ocsd.org). He wants to know what concerns you have with safety and security in Rossmoor.

He reported that year over year Rossmoor crime rates are actually lower. So while there has not be an increase in crime in Rossmoor, Lt Puckett agrees with residents that we should be concerned with the activity in the area and he plans to take action on our behalf.

At this time there is no evidence of any homeless living in Rossmoor or in any of the flood control channels within Rossmoor. The Lieutenant said no one should be in the flood control channels and his officers will arrest anyone they find there for trespassing. If you see someone in the channel, call the Sheriff's office (714.647.7000) immediately.

Lt. Puckett also introduced his team of deputies to the audience and said they will be addressing the safety and security issues in Rossmoor and will find solutions. And they need our help. We need to report any activity that seems out of place including people on bikes who don't belong in Rossmoor.

Coffee with a Cop
This Thursday, November 3rd, Lt. Puckett will be partnering with the Los Alamitos Police Department to meet with Rossmoor and Los Alamitos residents. They will be at the Starbucks next to Sherwin-Williams Paint store (3575 Katella at Pine Street) from 8:00 to 10:00. Please stop by and introduce yourself and collaborate on the issues.

Supervisor Steel's Update
Tim Whitacre from Supervisor Steel's office discussed the homeless situation in the County and region. He said the Supervisor is concerned and is working to bring the multiple agencies together to get a resolution for all of West County (Rossmoor, Seal Beach, and Los Alamitos).

An update on the broken/cut gates. There 3 on the west side of Rossmoor. The north and south are in process of being repaired. The center gate has been repaired by OC Public Works. Progress is being made.

Share your concerns
Mr. Whitacre invites any Rossmoor resident to call him at his office (714.834.3220) or email him directly (tim.whitacre@ocgov.com) to voice concerns and ideas about the safety and security of Rossmoor. Please take him up on his offer if you have something to share.

Please remember to lock your vehicles and close your garage doors when you are not in them. About 50% of the crimes in Rossmoor are through open or unlocked doors.

Just taking these steps will help discourage criminal activity in Rossmoor

Rossmoor Christmas Lights Celebration

Remember the Rossmoor homes that had Santa’s sleigh and reindeer flying over the street from one house to another?  Or the huge 15’ lighted Christmas tree that you could see across Rush Park?  Remember the luminaries that somehow stayed lit at the entrance of Rossmoor Way, or large palm trees on the corner that were wrapped with lights to the top?  Those were all great memories driving around during Christmas past in Rossmoor.

In 2007 we started to honor the homes that take the time to create these wonderful memories for all to share. The Rossmoor Christmas Lights Celebration has become an annual tradition. And the tradition continues to grow and form new memories.  Which homes and decorations will you remember from this year?

The Christmas Elves begin to descend upon Rossmoor shortly after Thanksgiving and leave a Winter Wonderland for all of us to enjoy (even though they keep forgetting the snow). So, keep your eye out for the more than 30 homes that jump in each year all over the Rossmoor Neighborhood.

Rossmoor Wildlife Watch
Coyotes in Rossmoor

Coyote sightings in Rossmoor have been fluctuating over the past month and we have not had any pet losses reported. Thank you for your reports and the steps you've taken to make Rossmoor a less desirable place for coyotes to frequent.

Please continue to be careful with your pets (keep them indoors or within your sight, and NO NOT leave pet food outside after feeding time).

Our Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program is continuing to collect reports and monitoring coyote behavior and movement based on these reports. Please do continue to report any coyote activity on the Rossmoor Wildlife Watch website.

If you would like to find out more about our Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program and discover what we are doing, please
sign up for more information.

Please report all coyote sightings here: RossmoorWildlife.org/report

The coyote challenge we face here in Rossmoor and throughout Southern California does not have a magical "fix it" solution. It will take a community effort (that's you and me, not "them") to keep our pets safe and reduce the risks in our neighborhood. Please learn what you can do at your home and for everyone in Rossmoor.

Rossmoor Walk & Talk

Rossmoor resident Bernie Beskind coordinates the weekly Rossmoor Walk & Talk  meeting at Rush Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30. That is unless it's raining, then there's no walk.

The program is simple enough, whoever attends forms groups of 2-4 people and walk around Rush Park and they talk. How long they walk, how fast they walk, and what they talk about is up to them. If you need a topic to talk about, Bernie will be happy to help you out.

It's a real Win-Win
Bernie's idea creates an informal way to meet your neighbors and get some exercise at the same time. It could save or at least extend your life, plus you'll get to meet some really great people. And that is a huge win-win.

Come join us! The Rossmoor Walk & Talk is open to all ages.

The more the merrier - Invite your friends and please spread the word. Rossmoor Walk & Talk meets are held every Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Rush Park.

If you have questions, please email Bernie (BernieB_90720@yahoo.com), or come see him on Tuesdays at 10:30 at Rush Park. Bernie will be the energetic guy with glasses, short hair, long in years and walking slowly.

RHA Membership

The Rossmoor Homeowners Association (RHA) is a membership funded, non-profit organization and as such relies primarily on member dues and fund-raising to cover its annual costs.

What costs?

Great question, glad you asked.

The Rossmoor Homeowners Association:

And while these costs are not great, they do add up throughout the year. And that's why we ask you to join or renew your membership with the RHA. And at $25 per household, it's a steal. Just hop on over to the RHA website and fill in your information.

You'll be supporting the RHA and its many efforts to keep Rossmoor the great place to live it is today. Join or renew today!
