Hi
Feels like Spring is in the air! Sure there's a 50/50 chance of some drizzle this afternoon, but we should be warm and mostly sunny the rest of the week. And, if you
haven't taken a stroll through Rossmoor recently you should. The lawns are greening up and the flowers are blooming away. Just beautiful.
Sweeper Monday
Tomorrow (Monday) is Street Sweeper Day here in Rossmoor. Please move all vehicles (and trash cans) from the streets so the
sweepers can clean the gutters. Thanks!
Just 10 days left - Don't Miss Out! March 15th is the deadline for our High school Scholarship Award applications. If you (or someone you know) is graduating from high school this May or June, please review the Scholarship requirements and submit your application before the deadline.
LA Fitness / CALAF Discussion
Meeting: Monday (2/6) The Coalition Against LA Fitness is holding an information meeting at Griffins in the Vons Center on Los Al Blvd at 7:00 p.m. Monday (tomorrow).
Come get your questions answered about the widespread impacts of this upcoming proposal (EIR is in progress now) and what we as a community can do to preserve our neighborhoods.
Are you Raising Mosquitoes in Your Backyard? A new season for a growing issue is coming to us here in Rossmoor:
Mosquitoes!
With all the rain, there are hundreds of new breeding grounds right here in Rossmoor. Do you have any standing water in your flower pots, baskets or buckets? Mosquitoes can breed in as little as a bottle cap of water. Let's not let mosquitoes and the diseases they carry breed in
Rossmoor!

LA Fitness Health Club @ The
Shops |
The Shops at Rossmoor and LA Fitness have resubmitted essentially the same proposal that was withdrawn last fall to build a 37,000 square foot facility in the parking lot behind Sprouts.
While the idea of a
gym may be okay, the impacts on Rossmoor and Seal Beach residents or live in and around the proposed project have not be adequately considered according to the letter sent to the Seal Beach Planning Commission. The full letter is here on our website.
The developer is completing an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) that will be released in the coming months for public comment. We won't have any new project news until the EIR is released.
However, we know all over night parking in the Shops @ Rossmoor parking lot will end on May 31, which will impact Rossmoor
streets and residents with additional parked cars.
Coalition Against LA Fitness Project The non-profit Coalition Against LA Fitness (CALAF) is raising funds to help represent the Rossmoor and Seal Beach residents and shoppers who frequent the
Shops to be heard. To find out how you can help support CALAF, please see their website, Facebook group and Go Fund Me page.

Are You Breeding Mosquitoes in Your
Yard? |
After our rain this winter or even after you run your sprinklers, your yard could have new and potentially hazardous breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes breed in standing water – as little as a bottle cap full will do. Anything that will hold water can for 5-7 days can become a breeding ground.
In fact, according to the Orange County Vector Control, about half of all mosquitoes in Orange County come from
residential yards. Do you have a tarp that collects water in the folds? That’s a favorite breeding ground. so are buckets, pails, old fountains, ponds, boats, car and boat covers, old tires, cans, boxes and bottle caps. Seriously, anything that can hold water is a potential breeding ground.
Be a good neighbor and check your yard with using this
simple checklist!!

Rossmoor Residents Crowned King &
Queen
|
The Los Alamitos Education Foundation (LAEF) crowned the King and Queen of Hearts on Feb. 24 at The Grand in Long Beach.
The Queen of Hearts is Kerrie DaVanon, owner of Happy Hour Fit Club, a Rossmoor resident and district parent.
The King of Hearts is Brian Leibl, Rossmoor resident and Los Alamitos High School parent.
All eight Royal Court candidates ended their 10-week fundraising campaign at the Royal Ball and Coronation — the grand fundraising total was $180,000! This far exceeded the previous record, set during the 2014-15 campaign, of $110,000. Every dollar that each candidate raised counted as a vote, and DaVanon and Leibl were the top fundraisers.
Carrie Logue, LAEF Executive Director said, “We are ecstatic and humbled by the tremendous amount of time and effort all the candidates put into the King and Queen of Hearts campaign. We are thrilled by the engagement of our community and how the candidates introduced many new people to LAEF’s mission!”
“I am especially pleased by the outpouring of support for the LAEF Programs Scholarship fund. Included in the grand total of $180,000 is over $12,000 that was donated by generous guests at the event. These funds will make sure that every child in our district, regardless of any hardship a family might be facing, has access to our excellent
after-school and summer enrichment programs,” said Logue.
Archduke sponsors SXS Industries and Southland Credit Union were on hand to cheer on all the candidates. Duke sponsors King Financial Group, Alamitos Eye Care, mac-fusion, Mass Mutual, Griffins Grill, Penske Toyota and Wells Fargo also applauded the Royal Court and
their amazing fundraising accomplishment. The crowd enjoyed music from a jazz quartet of Los Alamitos High School students. Dr. Andrew Pulver, Los Al USD Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, was the Master of Ceremonies.
The 2016-17 Queen Royal Court members are Watersafe Swim School owner Ginny Ferguson, Oak Middle
School principal Erin Kominsky, and Seal Beach Chamber past president Deb Machen. The King Royal Court members are New York Life agent Jeffrey Blancq, Brew Kitchen Ale House owner Joe Maggiore, and Tom Rowe, owner of The Abbey restaurant and president of the Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce.
LAEF President Sean Payne said, “I
am truly amazed by the ongoing success of King and Queen of Hearts campaign. Our fundraising has totaled to over $400,000 over the past four years and Royal Ball attendance has grown to nearly 250 community members. This will continue to benefit all students as proceeds support our STEAM Initiative (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, Math), which provides instruction and fairs on all campuses, and the district-wide STEAM showcase on May 20 at LAHS. It also supports Media Center teachers
at all elementary schools and seed funds to enhance STEAM learning all year long.”

West County CERT & How
It Helps |
The West County Community Emergency Response
Team or CERT is a FEMA sponsored program that's primary purpose is to educate people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their family, neighborhood, or workplace.
In Western Orange County, our CERT Program is comprised of those who live and/or work in Buena Park, Cypress, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Seal Beach, Rossmoor, Westminster and their attached communities. The West County CERT Program is coordinated through the local police departments. Seal Beach PD is the lead department for West County CERT.
Upcoming Basic Training Event
West County CERT is holding a basic training course in April at the Joint Forces
Training Base. This is a golden opportunity to find out how more about CERT and prepare yourself and family for an emergency event.
The CERT basic training course covers basic disaster response skills, such as
fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members are better able to assist their family, neighborhood or workplace following an event when first responders (paramedics, fire, police) are not immediately available to help.
Did you know....
In a wide spread emergency event like an earthquake, it could be 3 to 7 DAYS before any emergency responders are
available to reach Rossmoor and other neighborhoods and businesses in Western Orange County.
This is why attending the CERT basic training is so important for you - for the safety/survival of your family, if no other reason. Please make the time and take this course. Plus, you may even have some fun while you learn.
Course Dates:
Friday April 7 6:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m. Saturday April 8 8:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m.
Friday April 14 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Saturday April 15 8:00 a.m. to 5:00
p.m.
Location:
Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base (JFTB)
Veterans Service Center Building 244
There is no charge for the course and is open to anyone 18 years or older; 16+ with parent or guardian permission; 14+ with parent or guardian participation.
Get more information on the course and the application here.

Coyote sightings in Rossmoor have decreased over the past couple of months. This decrease is typical for the time of year. Unfortunately, it does not indicate the coyotes are not in Rossmoor. They are still here.
For those of
you who have made reports, THANK YOU. You are helping us track coyote behavior which is critical to any future removal attempts.
Please continue to be careful with your pets (keep them indoors or within your sight, and NO NOT leave pet food outside after feeding time).
Our Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program is continuing to collect reports and monitoring coyote behavior and movement based on these reports. Please continue to report any coyote activity you see on the
Rossmoor Wildlife Watch website.
If you would like to find out more about our Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program and discover what we are doing, please sign up for more information.
The coyote challenge we face here in Rossmoor and throughout Southern California does not have a
magical "fix it" solution. It will take a community effort (that's you and me, not "them") to keep our pets safe and reduce the risks in our neighborhood. Please learn what you can do at your home and for everyone in Rossmoor.
The Rossmoor Homeowners Association (RHA) is a membership funded, non-profit
organization and as such relies primarily on member dues and fund-raising to cover its annual costs.
What costs?
Great question, glad you asked. The Rossmoor Homeowners Association:
