[rha] Spring Ahead, Water Issues, LA Fitness EIR Released, & Final Days for Scholarship Apps

Published: Fri, 03/10/17

Hi

Well it's that time of year again when we need to Spring Ahead an hour on Sunday at 2:00 a.m. Most folks set their clocks ahead before they head to bed and lose that hour of sleep.

The choice is yours, but most of the country will move an hour ahead by Sunday when you get up.

Seal Beach Releases LA Fitness EIR
The City of Seal Beach has released the draft EIR for public comment here on their website. Public comments are being accepted until Monday April 24th.

The health club is expected to be open from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, 5:00 a.m.  to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, and 8:00 a.m.  to 8:00 p.m. on and Sunday.

This EIR is long (920 pages) and was produced fairly quickly (in about 6 weeks) so is well worth a read and please do comment to the City with your concerns if you have any.

Water Issues
Golden State Water has has several "colored water calls" from both the Shops at Rossmoor and residents in the immediate vicinity.  Golden State crews have been out after hours performing some intermediate system flushing in the shopping center and of Rossmoor intersecting Montecito Road between Woodstock Rd. and Copa de Oro Drive.

This is ahead of tract wide flushing that will occur over the next two to three months. You can read more about the flushing process here. We will announce the schedule in the eNews Blast and on our website once we have more information.

Just 5 days left - Don't Miss Out!
March 15th is the deadline for our High school Scholarship Award applications. If you (or someone you know) is graduating from high school this May or June, please review the Scholarship requirements and submit your application before the deadline.

Are You Breeding Mosquitoes in Your Yard?
King & Queen of Hearts

After our rain this winter or even after you run your sprinklers, your yard could have new and potentially hazardous breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes breed in standing water – as little as a bottle cap full will do. Anything that will hold water can for 5-7 days can become a breeding ground.

In fact, according to the Orange County Vector Control, about half of all mosquitoes in Orange County come from residential yards. Do you have a tarp that collects water in the folds? That’s a favorite breeding ground. so are buckets, pails, old fountains, ponds, boats, car and boat covers, old tires, cans, boxes and bottle caps. Seriously, anything that can hold water is a potential breeding ground.

Be a good neighbor and check your yard with using this simple checklist!!

Rossmoor Walk & Talk

Rossmoor residents Bernie Beskind & Herb Halling coordinates the weekly Rossmoor Walk & Talk  meeting at Rush Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30. That is unless it's raining, then there's no walk.

NEW WALK ADDED!
Thursdays at 4:00 p.m. at Rush Park, there is a new group of walkers. Plan to join them next Thursday to walk and talk

The program is simple enough, whoever attends forms groups of 2-4 people and walk around Rush Park and they talk. How long they walk, how fast they walk, and what they talk about is up to them. If you need a topic to talk about, Bernie will be happy to help you out.

It's a real Win-Win
Bernie's idea creates an informal way to meet your neighbors and get some exercise at the same time. It could save or at least extend your life, plus you'll get to meet some really great people. And that is a huge win-win.

Come join us! The Rossmoor Walk & Talk is open to all ages.

The more the merrier - Invite your friends and please spread the word. Rossmoor Walk & Talk meets are held every Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Rush Park.

If you have questions, please email Bernie (BernieB_90720@yahoo.com), or come see him on Tuesdays at 10:30 at Rush Park. Bernie will be the energetic guy with glasses, short hair, long in years and walking slowly.

West Orange County CERT & How It Helps

The West Orange County Community Emergency Response Team or CERT is a FEMA sponsored program that's primary purpose is to educate people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their family, neighborhood, or workplace.

In Western Orange County, our CERT Program is comprised of those who live and/or work in Buena Park, Cypress, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Seal Beach, Rossmoor, Westminster and their attached communities. The West Orange County CERT Program is coordinated through the local police departments. Seal Beach PD is the lead department for West Orange County CERT.

Upcoming Basic Training Event

West Orange County CERT is holding the CERT Basic Training course in April at the Joint Forces Training Base. This is a golden opportunity to find out more about CERT and prepare yourself and family for an emergency event.

The CERT basic training course covers basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members are better able to assist their family, neighborhood or workplace following an event when first responders (paramedics, fire, police) are not immediately available to help.

Did you know....

In a wide spread emergency event like an earthquake, it could be 3 to 7 DAYS before any emergency responders are available to reach Rossmoor and other neighborhoods and businesses in Western Orange County.

This is why attending the CERT basic training is so important for you - for the safety/survival of your family, if no other reason. Please make the time and take this course. Plus, you may even have some fun while you learn.

Course Dates:

Friday April 7             6:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m.

Saturday April 8         8:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m.

Friday April 14           6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Saturday April 15       8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Location:

Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base (JFTB)

Veterans Service Center Building 244

There is no charge for the course and is open to anyone 18 years or older; 16+ with parent or guardian permission; 14+ with parent or guardian participation.

Get more information on the course and the application here.

Rossmoor Wildlife Watch
Coyotes in Rossmoor

Coyote sightings in Rossmoor have decreased over the past couple of months. This decrease is typical for the time of year. Unfortunately, it does not indicate the coyotes are not in Rossmoor. They are still here.

For those of you who have made reports, THANK YOU. You are helping us track coyote behavior which is critical to any future removal attempts.

Please continue to be careful with your pets (keep them indoors or within your sight, and NO NOT leave pet food outside after feeding time).

Our Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program is continuing to collect reports and monitoring coyote behavior and movement based on these reports. Please continue to report any coyote activity you see on the Rossmoor Wildlife Watch website.

If you would like to find out more about our Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program and discover what we are doing, please
sign up for more information.

Please report all coyote sightings here: RossmoorWildlife.org/report

The coyote challenge we face here in Rossmoor and throughout Southern California does not have a magical "fix it" solution. It will take a community effort (that's you and me, not "them") to keep our pets safe and reduce the risks in our neighborhood. Please learn what you can do at your home and for everyone in Rossmoor.

RHA Membership

The Rossmoor Homeowners Association (RHA) is a membership funded, non-profit organization and as such relies primarily on member dues and fund-raising to cover its annual costs.

What costs?

Great question, glad you asked.

The Rossmoor Homeowners Association:

And while these costs are not great, they do add up throughout the year. And that's why we ask you to join or renew your membership with the RHA. And at $30 per household, it's a steal. Just hop on over to the RHA website and fill in your information.

You'll be supporting the RHA and its many efforts to keep Rossmoor the great place to live it is today. Join or renew today!
