[rha] No Fool's T-Shirt Design Contest, LA Fitnes Project, Community Festival

Published: Sat, 04/01/17

Hi

No one will say you're a fool for living here in Rossmoor - at least if the weather is your measure. With sunny skies, lows in the 50's and highs in the 70's for the first week in April, it's going to be very nice in the neighborhood.

This terrific weather is getting people back outside and there is a lot of gardening and yard "remodeling" going on in Rossmoor as well. Big rocks are moving from neighbor to neighbor. Plants and ground cover are going in, and people are sharing stories and news with each other.

One big story that is apparently catching many people by surprise is the 37,000 square foot LA Fitness gym that has been proposed by the Shops At Rossmoor. While the parking lot behind Sprouts is "open" the proposed project does not take into account the traffic and parking implications for Rossmoor. Find out more here.

RHA T-Shirt Design Contest starts NOW

Sweeper Monday
It's the first Monday of April, so get those vehicles off the streets of Rossmoor so the sweepers can clean things up for us.

Water Line Flushing
Golden State Water will be flushing the water lines in Rossmoor on weekday evenings between now and May 11. The flushing will take place between 9:00 PM and 2:00 AM. Golden State advises customers NOT do laundry during these hours when your area is being flushed. For more specific details on your block, please see their website as the block schedule changes frequently as progress is made.

Update: Most of the flushing for Rossmoor has been completed based on the map above. If your water is discolored, please call and report it to Golden State.

You can read more about the flushing process here

LA Fitness Health Club @ The Shops

The Shops at Rossmoor and LA Fitness have resubmitted essentially the same proposal that was withdrawn last fall to build a 37,000 square foot facility in the parking lot behind Sprouts.

The developer has completed a draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) and it has been release for public comment until Monday April 24th. Please read and comment to the City of Seal Beach.

The draft EIR is available for public comment here on the City website.

The health club is expected to be operating from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, 5:00 a.m.  to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, and 8:00 a.m.  to 8:00 p.m. on and Sunday.

This EIR is long (920 pages) and was produced fairly quickly (in about 6 weeks) so is well worth a read and please do comment to the City with your concerns if you have any.

Coalition Against LA Fitness Project
The non-profit Coalition Against LA Fitness (CALAF) is raising funds to help represent the Rossmoor and Seal Beach residents and shoppers who frequent the Shops to be heard. To find out how you can help support CALAF, please see their website, Facebook group and Go Fund Me page.

Next meeting: Monday April 3, 7:00 p.m. Griffins Grill in Los Alamitos - Come find out what's happening

Are You Breeding Mosquitoes in Your Yard?
King & Queen of Hearts

After our rain this winter or even after you run your sprinklers, your yard could have new and potentially hazardous breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes breed in standing water – as little as a bottle cap full will do. Anything that will hold water can for 5-7 days can become a breeding ground.

In fact, according to the Orange County Vector Control, about half of all mosquitoes in Orange County come from residential yards. Do you have a tarp that collects water in the folds? That’s a favorite breeding ground. so are buckets, pails, old fountains, ponds, boats, car and boat covers, old tires, cans, boxes and bottle caps. Seriously, anything that can hold water is a potential breeding ground.

Be a good neighbor and check your yard with using this simple checklist!!

Rossmoor Recycles: Saturday 4/29

Our next monthly Rossmoor Recycles Drive is on Saturday, April 29. Please bring your recyclable newspapers, mixed paper waste, recyclable cans, and plastic bottles to Rush Park.

You'll be helping the environment AND putting some much-needed funds back into the Rossmoor community!

Locally owned The File Depot will be in the parking lot at Rush Park to take your boxes for a Rossmoor Special of just $6 per banker sized box or if you have other sized boxes, bags or containers, the cost is just 24 cents a pound.

We’ll see you there!

Please separate Newspaper materials from other paper waste, e.g. cardboard and magazines and other paper materials waste.  Thanks for your help!

Rossmoor Walk & Talk

Rossmoor residents Bernie Beskind & Herb Halling coordinates the weekly Rossmoor Walk & Talk  meeting at Rush Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30. That is unless it's raining, then there's no walk.

NEW WALK ADDED!
Thursdays at 4:00 p.m. at Rush Park, there is a new group of walkers. Plan to join them next Thursday to walk and talk

The program is simple enough, whoever attends forms groups of 2-4 people and walk around Rush Park and they talk. How long they walk, how fast they walk, and what they talk about is up to them. If you need a topic to talk about, Bernie will be happy to help you out.

It's a real Win-Win
Bernie's idea creates an informal way to meet your neighbors and get some exercise at the same time. It could save or at least extend your life, plus you'll get to meet some really great people. And that is a huge win-win.

Come join us! The Rossmoor Walk & Talk is open to all ages.

The more the merrier - Invite your friends and please spread the word. Rossmoor Walk & Talk meets are held every Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Rush Park.

If you have questions, please email Bernie (BernieB_90720@yahoo.com), or come see him on Tuesdays at 10:30 at Rush Park. Bernie will be the energetic guy with glasses, short hair, long in years and walking slowly.

West Orange County CERT & How It Helps

The West Orange County Community Emergency Response Team or CERT is a FEMA sponsored program that's primary purpose is to educate people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their family, neighborhood, or workplace.

In Western Orange County, our CERT Program is comprised of those who live and/or work in Buena Park, Cypress, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Seal Beach, Rossmoor, Westminster and their attached communities. The West Orange County CERT Program is coordinated through the local police departments. Seal Beach PD is the lead department for West Orange County CERT.

Upcoming Basic Training Event

West Orange County CERT is holding the CERT Basic Training course in April at the Joint Forces Training Base. This is a golden opportunity to find out more about CERT and prepare yourself and family for an emergency event.

The CERT basic training course covers basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members are better able to assist their family, neighborhood or workplace following an event when first responders (paramedics, fire, police) are not immediately available to help.

Did you know....

In a wide spread emergency event like an earthquake, it could be 3 to 7 DAYS before any emergency responders are available to reach Rossmoor and other neighborhoods and businesses in Western Orange County.

This is why attending the CERT basic training is so important for you - for the safety/survival of your family, if no other reason. Please make the time and take this course. Plus, you may even have some fun while you learn.

Course Dates:

Friday April 7             6:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m.

Saturday April 8         8:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m.

Friday April 14           6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Saturday April 15       8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Location:

Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base (JFTB)

Veterans Service Center Building 244

There is no charge for the course and is open to anyone 18 years or older; 16+ with parent or guardian permission; 14+ with parent or guardian participation.

Get more information on the course and the application here.

Rossmoor Wildlife Watch
Coyotes in Rossmoor

Coyote sightings in Rossmoor have decreased over the past couple of months. This decrease is typical for the time of year. Unfortunately, it does not indicate the coyotes are not in Rossmoor. They are still here.

For those of you who have made reports, THANK YOU. You are helping us track coyote behavior which is critical to any future removal attempts.

Please continue to be careful with your pets (keep them indoors or within your sight, and NO NOT leave pet food outside after feeding time).

Our Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program is continuing to collect reports and monitoring coyote behavior and movement based on these reports. Please continue to report any coyote activity you see on the Rossmoor Wildlife Watch website.

If you would like to find out more about our Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program and discover what we are doing, please
sign up for more information.

Please report all coyote sightings here: RossmoorWildlife.org/report

The coyote challenge we face here in Rossmoor and throughout Southern California does not have a magical "fix it" solution. It will take a community effort (that's you and me, not "them") to keep our pets safe and reduce the risks in our neighborhood. Please learn what you can do at your home and for everyone in Rossmoor.

RHA Membership
Because Rossmoor Matters

The Rossmoor Homeowners Association (RHA) is a membership funded, non-profit organization and as such relies primarily on member dues and fund-raising to cover its annual costs.

What costs?

Great question, glad you asked.

The Rossmoor Homeowners Association:

And while these costs are not great, they do add up throughout the year. And that's why we ask you to join or renew your membership with the RHA. And at $30 per household, it's a steal. Just hop on over to the RHA website and fill in your information.

You'll be supporting the RHA and its many efforts to keep Rossmoor the great place to live it is today. Join or renew today!
