Ahh, June. Summer is almost upon us along with our summer vacations and exciting excursions. Summer in Rossmoor is
always enjoyable with lots of sun and fun to be had.
Get out and enjoy this weekend as our highs look to be in the high 70's and low 80's. There's even an astronomy club meet at the pier in Seal Beach on Saturday evening. With Jupiter and 4 of its moons available to see, it could be a spectacular night. In any
case, get out and enjoy yourself.
LA Fitness Project Update It appears now that the June 19th Seal Beach Planning Commission meeting will have the LA Fitness project on its agenda (this is a change from 6/5). This means a vote could be taken that evening. Now is
the time to show up at a meeting. The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. but get to the Seal Beach City Hall early if you want a seat to cheer on your "side" of the issue, even if you don't want to speak to the Commission. More info below.
It's Back! The RHA Fiction Writing Contest Our newest RHA Board member, Cathy Larson, has resurrected the RHA Fiction Writing Contest along with some really great prizes. Get your thinking caps on, review some of the past awarded stories and then get writing! More details

Monday is Sweeper Day It's sweeper day in Rossmoor on Monday June 5th. Please move your vehicles and trash cans off all Rossmoor streets so the sweeper can bust up mosquito puddles and clean our gutters.

For six consecutive years, Rossmoor residents captivated our imaginations with fictional stories about Rossmoor and Rossmoor characters who fell in love, returned
from war, discovered new friendships, uncovered Ross Cortese’s dead body, and recounted the backstory of our street names. The years 2009 to 2014 gave rise to budding writers, and creativity meandered our neighborhood boulevards. This year
the Rossmoor Homeowners Association is proud to resurrect our popular Fiction Writing Contest — the seventh in our almost-annual, yearly contest. You can check our some of the past winning essays here Time to dust off your typewriters, dig into your imagination, clear a space in your favorite writing corner, and put your stories to paper. The contest is open to any Rossmoor resident with a yarn to spin and a tale begging to be told. You don’t have to be a professional writer to enter. Entries should have a Rossmoor
theme of some type: either placed in Rossmoor or about characters who came from Rossmoor. Will this year’s winning story be about a crooked government official who approves a dangerous bridge serving Rossmoor residents in exchange for a
bribe? Or about the challenge of a big match to a Rossmoor youth on one of our parks’ soccer fields? Or perhaps about a soldier serving his country far from home and dreaming back to his days in Rossmoor? Or maybe even a thriller with a nod to The DaVinci Code, outlining the meaning behind Rossmoor’s quirks? The winner of the contest will receive a $200 VISA gift card from this year’s sponsor, Write Away U, and have their stories published on the RHA website. The runner-up will win a $100 gift certificate, and the author of the third-place story will get a $50 gift certificate — both gift certificates from a local eatery. Even if you don’t win, it’s bound to be challenging and fun, and all entrants will be invited to a RHA-sponsored picnic in the park sometime this summer.

Concert & Movie in the Park |

Concerts and Movies in the Park are back this summer with a terrific line up.
For June, Elm Street will play for your listening and dancing
pleasure followed by the family film "Sing." The band starts at 6:00 p.m. followed by the movie at dusk. Come out and join us for one or both at Rush Park. Please bring your blankets and chairs, insect repellent and even a picnic dinner.
These events are free and very popular with the neighborhood,
so you may want to show up a bit early.
Our next concert & movie event will be on Friday July 14th followed by the third installment on Friday August 18th. Plan to join in the fun!

Free Senior Resources Mobile

The OC Office on Aging has launched the OC Senior Resources Mobile Application. The free mobile app allows the public to easily access senior services and resources, such as disability services, caregiver support, employment, education, financial assistance and insurance. Additional features allow
individuals to seek hotline numbers, behavioral health services, veteran benefits and volunteer opportunities.
"We're always looking for new ways to increase engagement with the senior members of our community and their families," said Supervisor Bartlett. "With so many county residents using smart phones and tablets, we are excited to offer this mobile-friendly countywide resource tool for
young-at-heart constituents" said Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Michelle Steel, Second District Supervisor.
The OC Senior Resources mobile app is available for download on Android, iPhone, and IPad. Simply search "OC Senior" on the App Store and Google Play.

"Over the last few years, Orange County has experienced an increase in cases of mosquito-borne illnesses such as the West Nile virus. Furthermore, the presence of the invasive Aedes mosquitoes
threatens the county with diseases such as Zika virus, dengue fever, and Chikungunya" said Mary-Joy Coburn, OCMVCD Public Affairs Coordinator. "To ensure the
protection of family, friends, and pets, it's extremely important to make sure that residents are taking the proper steps to eliminate standing water on their properties and to control the mosquito population." To kick off the mosquito season, OCMVCD has started participating in city events and presentations to educate the public about the mosquito sources found on their yards and what they can do to protect themselves. "Eliminating standing water is the most important thing to remember in order to control mosquitoes," added Coburn. "Conduct a property inspection every week and dump and drain all items that can potentially hold water." Orange County residents can do a variety of things to help protect themselves and the community, and to help reduce the risk from mosquitoes this season: - Eliminate any standing water around the home.
- Make sure all of the window and door screens on the property are in good repair.
- Wear a repellent containing DEET®, Picaridin, IR3535, or
Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.
- Contact the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District to report dead birds or neglected swimming pools.

The Shops at Rossmoor and LA Fitness have resubmitted essentially the same proposal that was withdrawn last fall to build a 37,000 square foot facility in the parking lot behind Sprouts.
PLEASE SHOW UP at Seal Beach Planning Commission Meeting on
June 5th at the Seal Beach City Council chambers. The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. Arrive early if you want to have a seat. Please express your opinions on the project to the Commission.
The health club is expected to be operating from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, and 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on and Sunday.
There are noise and safety concerns for all in the surrounding area, and mostly the condominium residents who have bedroom windows less than 100 feet from the parking lot.
Coalition Against LA Fitness Project The non-profit

Sargent Feely of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department recommends the following practices to keep Rossmoor residents and their property safe:
Knock, Knock Burglaries Recent reports have been received from residents about strangers knocking on their doors both during the day and well into the evening.
To protect your family and property, when an unexpected knock occurs at your door, do not open your door. Rather, keep the door closed and locked, ask who the person is, and what they want. Make note of what they say and decline their offer or service. Do not open your door to a stranger. Burglars use this “knock,
knock…who’s there?” technique to gain entry to homes, scope out home occupancy, or evaluate content value.
Remember, if you have a suspicious encounter, immediately contact OCSD at 714.647.7000 and provide the individual’s direction and mode of travel, individual’s physical description (from head to toe, clothing coloring and style is important), and time and location that the incident occurred.
Lock It, Hide It, Keep It Keep your car doors locked at all times when parked in your driveway or on the street. Many cars in Rossmoor that are broken into have been unlocked. Also, remove items from your car or place them out of view in your trunk for safe keeping. Thieves go down streets and check cars parked both on the street and in driveways to see if they are locked. If the car is locked, they will typically move on to an unlocked
car.
Catalytic Converter Theft Stolen catalytic converters, particularly from Toyota trucks and other models, have been increasing. Law enforcement recommends parking in your garage to prevent this type of theft. If you must park in your driveway or on the street, add motion detection lights
or continuous lights illuminating your property as a deterrent. If you have a vehicle with an easily accessible and highly desirable catalytic converter, get your catalytic converter etched with your vehicle license plate number by your vehicle service provider.

Talk meeting at Rush Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30. That is unless it's raining, then there's no walk.
NEW WALK ADDED! Thursdays at 4:00 p.m. at Rush Park, there is a new group of
walkers. Plan to join them next Thursday to walk and talk
The program is simple enough, whoever attends forms groups of 2-4 people and walk around Rush Park and they talk. How long they walk, how fast they walk, and what they talk about is up to them. If you need a topic to talk about, Bernie will be happy to help you out. It's a real Win-Win Bernie's idea creates an informal way to meet your neighbors and get some exercise at the same time. It could save or at least extend your life, plus you'll get to meet some really
great people. And that is a huge win-win. Come join us! The Rossmoor Walk & Talk is open to all ages. The more the merrier - Invite your friends and please spread the word. Rossmoor Walk & Talk meets are held every Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Rush Park. If you have questions, please email Bernie

Coyote sightings in Rossmoor have decreased over the past couple of months. This decrease is typical for the time of year. Unfortunately, it does not indicate the coyotes are not in Rossmoor. They are still here.
For those of
you who have made reports, THANK YOU. You are helping us track coyote behavior which is critical to any future removal attempts.
Please continue to be careful with your pets (keep them indoors or within your sight, and NO NOT leave pet food outside after feeding time).
Our Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program is continuing to collect reports and monitoring coyote behavior and movement based on these reports. Please continue to report any coyote activity you see on the
Rossmoor Wildlife Watch website.
