This is the
week - There are a two important community hearings coming up this next week. NOW is your chance to get informed and have a voice in what's going on in and around Rossmoor.
LA Fitness Project Hearing The Seal Beach Planning Commission Public Hearing date for the LA Fitness Project is Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers located at 211 Eighth Street, Seal Beach. You can read the full notice here.
It's more important than ever to show up and let Seal Beach feel your
presence.
Katella/605 OCTA Public Information Session... On June 29, the OCTA will host one of the most publicized a public information meetings in recent memory (thanks OCTA!!). The meting will be held at
the Los Alamitos Community Center to inform business, residents and other organizations about the environmental study process.
The public is invited to attend the meeting to learn about the project, meet project staff, and share comments and ideas about improving the I-605/Katella Avenue interchange.
Please plan to attend. The event is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 29 6 – 8 p.m. in the Los Alamitos Community Center 10911 Oak Street in Los Alamitos.

Assemblyman Travis Allen (R-Huntington Beach) honored United States Army Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Milt Houghton, Ph.D. as the 2017 Veteran of the Year for the 72nd Assembly District. Dr. Houghton served in the US Army and Army Reserve from 1966 -1997 and is
a resident of Rossmoor.
“I am honored to present Dr. Houghton with the Veteran of the Year Award and personally thank him for all his years of service,” said Assemblyman Travis Allen. “It is the sacrifice and the courage of veterans such as Dr. Houghton that have afforded us the liberties we enjoy today. His invaluable commitment to our country and local community make him a distinguished citizen of the
72nd District.”
In the Vietnam era, Dr. Houghton served as a Platoon Leader, C Company 1/20 Battalion, in the 11th Light Infantry Brigade in-country before moving to the Headquarters Company also in Vietnam. While on reserve duty, Dr. Houghton served at the Pentagon, as an Assistant Commandant at the 6222nd USARF School, and as the Chief of Manpower Branch for Director of Resource Management, 63rd
ARCOM, at the Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos, among others many assignments. Dr. Houghton left the Army Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1997 and received several awards during his distinguished career, among them the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal (awarded six times), and the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross Unit Award.
“It has been an honor to be selected as
the 2017 Veteran of the Year for the 72nd Assembly District. I have met with Assemblyman Allen on a multiple occasions, and I am always happy to see his enthusiasm for our local issues. I was happy to partner with him today to highlight all the great work of all the veterans in our community and across the state,” says Dr. Houghton. Several civic organizations in Orange County have benefited from Dr. Houghton’s
generous volunteerism and dedication. He has been President of the Rossmoor Homeowners Association, President of the Los Alamitos/Seal Beach Rotary Club, Chair of the Los Alamitos Unified School District Personnel Commission, and Chair of the West Orange County Legislative Affairs Committee. Dr. Houghton received his BA in English Literature from Azusa Pacific University, his MA in Communications from CSU Fullerton, and his Doctor of Management from the University of Phoenix.
Milt and his wife Beverley have resided in Rossmoor for over 30 years and are both currently serving Rossmoor on the Rossmoor Homeowners Association Board.

The Shops at Rossmoor and LA Fitness have resubmitted essentially the same proposal that was withdrawn last fall to build a 37,000 square foot facility in the parking lot behind Sprouts.
PLEASE SHOW UP at Seal Beach Planning Commission Meeting on
Tuesday June 27th at the Seal Beach City Council chambers. The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. Arrive early if you want to have a seat. Please express your opinions on the project to the Commission.
If the LA Fitness project is approved by the planning commission, the City Council will hear the plans in the following few weeks. Watch the Seal Beach City website for details so you don't miss your chance to
let the City know how you feel about the project.

Entry Deadline

For six consecutive years, Rossmoor residents captivated our imaginations with fictional stories about Rossmoor and Rossmoor characters who fell in love, returned from war, discovered new friendships, uncovered Ross Cortese’s dead body, and recounted the backstory of our street names. The years 2009 to 2014 gave rise to budding writers, and creativity meandered our neighborhood boulevards. This year the Rossmoor Homeowners Association is proud to resurrect our popular Fiction Writing Contest — the seventh in our almost-annual, yearly contest. to dust off your typewriters, dig into your imagination, clear a space in your favorite writing corner, and put your stories to paper. The contest is open to any Rossmoor resident with a yarn to spin and a tale begging to be told. You don’t have to be a professional writer to enter. Entries should have a Rossmoor theme of some type: either placed in Rossmoor or about characters who came from Rossmoor. Will this year’s winning story be about a crooked government official who approves a dangerous bridge serving Rossmoor residents in exchange for a bribe? Or about the challenge of a big match to a Rossmoor youth on one of our parks’ soccer fields? Or perhaps about a soldier serving his country far from home and
dreaming back to his days in Rossmoor? Or maybe even a thriller with a nod to The DaVinci Code, outlining the meaning behind Rossmoor’s quirks? The winner of the contest will receive a $200 VISA gift card from this year’s sponsor, Write Away U, and have their stories published on the RHA website. The runner-up will win a $100 gift certificate, and the author of the third-place story will get a $50 gift certificate — both gift certificates from a local eatery. Even if you don’t win, it’s bound to be challenging and fun, and all entrants will be invited to a RHA-sponsored picnic in the park sometime this summer.

Concert & Movie in the Park |

Concerts and Movies in the Park are back this summer with a terrific line up.
For July, King Salmon will play for your listening and dancing pleasure followed by the family
film "Lego Batman." The band starts at 6:00 p.m. followed by the movie at dusk. Come out and join us for one or both at Rush Park. Please bring your blankets and chairs, insect repellent and even a picnic dinner.
These events are free and very popular with the neighborhood, so you may want to show up a bit
early.
Our last concert & movie event for the summer will be on Friday August 18th.

On Saturday (7/22) and Sunday (7/23) our friends at Shakespeare by the Sea will be presenting MacBeth and The Taming of the Shrew. Rush Park is the perfect place to see these plays put on by these terrific actors.
These live performances begin at 7:00 p.m each evening and are sure to please all in attendance. Bring your picnic dinner and a blanket or two and enjoy an evening out in the park

Rossmoor residents Bernie Beskind & Herb Halling coordinates the weekly Rossmoor Walk &
Talk meeting at Rush Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30. That is unless it's raining, then there's no walk.
NEW WALK ADDED! Thursdays at 4:00 p.m. at Rush Park, there is a new group of
walkers. Plan to join them next Thursday to walk and talk
The program is simple enough, whoever attends forms groups of 2-4 people and walk around Rush Park and they talk. How long they walk, how fast they walk, and what they talk about is up to them. If you need a topic to talk about, Bernie will be happy to help you out. It's a real Win-Win Bernie's idea creates an informal way to meet your neighbors and get some exercise at the same time. It could save or at least extend your life, plus you'll get to meet some really
great people. And that is a huge win-win. Come join us! The Rossmoor Walk & Talk is open to all ages. The more the merrier - Invite your friends and please spread the word. Rossmoor Walk & Talk meets are held every Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Rush Park. If you have questions, please email Bernie

Coyote sightings in Rossmoor have decreased to almost zero over the past couple of months. The coyote gates are down and that is a big help. Other easier food sources seem to be available to the local coyotes as well. Unfortunately, reduced sightings/reports does
not indicate the coyotes are not in Rossmoor. They are still here.
For those of you who have made reports, THANK YOU. You are helping us track coyote behavior which is critical to any future removal attempts.
Please
continue to be careful with your pets (keep them indoors or within your sight, and DO NOT leave pet food outside after feeding time).
Our
Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program continues to collect reports and monitors coyote behavior and movement based on these reports. Please continue to report any coyote activity you see on the Rossmoor Wildlife Watch website.

Depot will be in the parking lot at Rush Park to take your boxes for a Rossmoor Special of just $6 per banker sized box or if you have other sized boxes, bags or containers, the cost is just 24 cents a pound.
