[rha] Sweeper Monday, Writing Contest Awards, Curb Painting Update & LAUSD Town Hall Meeting

Published: Sun, 08/06/17

Hi

As our uncharacteristically muggy days continue, we are getting closer to the LAUSD Town Hall meeting at Los Al on Tuesday August 8th. Please plan to attend so you can get your questions about the projects and the probable property tax bond issue that will be on a 2018 ballot.

Also on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Rush Park, the RCSD will meet for their regularly scheduled Board meeting. Both meetings are important and unfortunately create a conflict. You can attend the LAUSD meeting and then join us at the RCSD meeting if you'd like

Monday (8/7) is Street Sweeper Monday. Remember to move your vehicles from all Rossmoor streets so the sweepers can clean things up.

...the Envelope, Please?
The RHA Fiction Writing Contest Awards have just been announced. All entrants will be invited to a picnic lunch later this month via email, but the important part is who won this year's contest?

From the judge's remarks it was a very tight contest with eight qualified entries all having to do with Rossmoor in some way. From the entry on our site:

Out of the sleepy tree-lined streets of Rossmoor, our recent crop of authors spun tales of days gone by, home remodels, lost loves, neighborhood tradition, Dan Brown-like fantasy, and retail-development drama in the 7th almost-Annual Fiction Writing Contest of 2017.

The contest is sponsored by the RHA and co-sponsored by Write Away U. The winner will receive a $200 VISA gift card. The second-place winner will receive a $100 gift certificate and the third-place winner a $50 gift certificate, both to a local eatery.

Our judge this year selected...

Did you really think we'd tell you here? Nope, go over to the site and read all eight stories (click here) and then congratulate the award winners!

LAUSD Town Hall Meeting
The Los Alamitos Unified School District is holding a town hall meeting on Tuesday August 8th to discuss and inform the public about facilities needs, especially at Los Al High.

The District is assessing support for a Bond measure for the 2018 election cycle to cover the costs of the proposed upgrades. More info below.

Curb Street Number Painting Update
The streets from the north end of Rossmoor down to Main Way have been completed. It will take another week or so to finish the job.

You can help speed the painting process by not placing your trash cans in front of your curb address. At least until your address has been repainted.

If you have questions or your home was some how missed, please contact us (the RHA) at info@Rossmoor-RHA.org, or by replying to this email.

THANKS to all of those of you who see the value in having curb our addresses updated and contributed to us to off-set the costs.

If you'd like to join your neighbors and make a donation to help off-set this expense, you can do so here on the RHA site. And thank you for your support.

LA Fitness Health Club @ The Shops

The developer for the LA Fitness project has appealed the Seal Beach Planning Commission's denial of the conditional use permit to the City Council.

The best estimate for when the Seal Beach City Council will hear the appeal is at their Monday 9/11 meeting. More details will follow.

What you can do now is to write to the Seal Beach City Council members and express your thoughts, support and or concerns for the project. It's important for them to know what impacts their decision will have on your life, and the impacts on Rossmoor. Please do share with them.

Coalition Against LA Fitness Project
The non-profit Coalition Against LA Fitness (CALAF) is raising funds to help represent the Rossmoor and Seal Beach residents and shoppers who frequent the Shops to be heard. To find out how you can help support CALAF, please see their website, Facebook group and Go Fund Me page.

Rossmoor Walk & Talk

Rossmoor residents Bernie Beskind & Herb Halling coordinates the weekly Rossmoor Walk & Talk  meeting at Rush Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30. That is unless it's raining, then there's no walk.

NEW WALK ADDED!
Thursdays at 4:00 p.m. at Rush Park, there is a new group of walkers. Plan to join them next Thursday to walk and talk

The program is simple enough, whoever attends forms groups of 2-4 people and walk around Rush Park and they talk. How long they walk, how fast they walk, and what they talk about is up to them. If you need a topic to talk about, Bernie will be happy to help you out.

It's a real Win-Win
Bernie's idea creates an informal way to meet your neighbors and get some exercise at the same time. It could save or at least extend your life, plus you'll get to meet some really great people. And that is a huge win-win.

Come join us! The Rossmoor Walk & Talk is open to all ages.

The more the merrier - Invite your friends and please spread the word. Rossmoor Walk & Talk meets are held every Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Rush Park.

If you have questions, please email Bernie (BernieB_90720@yahoo.com), or come see him on Tuesdays at 10:30 at Rush Park. Bernie will be the energetic guy with glasses, short hair, long in years and walking slowly.

Rossmoor Wildlife Watch
Coyotes in Rossmoor

Coyote sightings in Rossmoor have decreased to almost zero over the past couple of months. The coyote gates are down and that is a big help. Other easier food sources seem to be available to the local coyotes as well. Unfortunately, reduced sightings/reports does not indicate the coyotes are not in Rossmoor. They are still here.

For those of you who have made reports, THANK YOU. You are helping us track coyote behavior which is critical to any future removal attempts.

Please continue to be careful with your pets (keep them indoors or within your sight, and DO NOT leave pet food outside after feeding time).

Our Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program continues to collect reports and monitors coyote behavior and movement based on these reports. Please continue to report any coyote activity you see on the Rossmoor Wildlife Watch website.

If you would like to find out more about our Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program and discover what we are doing, please
sign up for more information.

Please report any coyote sightings here: RossmoorWildlife.org/report

The coyote challenge we face here in Rossmoor and throughout Southern California does not have a magical "fix it" solution. It will take a community effort (that's you and me, not "them") to keep our pets safe and reduce the risks in our neighborhood. Please learn what you can do at your home and for everyone in Rossmoor.

Rossmoor Recycles: Saturday 8/26

Our next monthly Rossmoor Recycles Drive is on Saturday, August 26th Please bring your recyclable newspapers, mixed paper waste, recyclable cans, and plastic bottles to Rush Park.

RHA Membership
Because Rossmoor Matters

What costs?

Great question, glad you asked.

The Rossmoor Homeowners Association:

And while these costs are not great, they do add up throughout the year. And that's why we ask you to join or renew your membership with the RHA. And at $30 per household, it's a steal. Just hop on over to the RHA website and fill in your information.
