Hi
Some beautiful weather we are having this week. It looks like we will warm up over the weekend and get into the upper 80's the following week as we head into the Labor Day
weekend.
As vacations come to an end and we begin gearing up for school and our fall activities, we have a number of important things happening in and around Rossmoor. The two most notable are the Seismic Survey and the Seal Beach City Council meeting regarding the LA Fitness project on 9/11. We have details for both below.
Remember too, the I-405 between I-605 and SR 71 is subject to closure, especially in the late night/early morning hours as part of the I-405 Improvement project. Details below.
Seismic Survey 2017
Rossmoor along with Seal Beach and Los Alamitos, have been selected as part of this year's Seismic Survey. More than 6,000 sensors will be placed in the area, with 399 being placed in Rossmoor. You can get the details here on our site.
In
short, between now and October, you can expect Survey Crews to knock on residents doors (they should be wearing orange vests and have ID), mark curbs in front of selected homes, place containers containing seismic sensors underground in the parkways of these locations, perform the tests, and then removed the sensors.
If you have questions about the process, please see the link above for contact information and details.
Back to School (Most of the note below is from our own Orange County Sheriff’s Department Crime Prevention Specialist Anitu Pattanaik.)
It’s back to school time again (Weaver started two weeks ago). I hope everyone enjoyed their summer. With the increase in traffic, school time can be challenging for drivers and pedestrians trying to get to and from school. Pedestrians, please remember to look both ways
and always use a crosswalk when crossing the street.
Drivers, please slow down for school zones and watch out for pedestrians and bicyclists. When driving within 500 to 1000 feet of a school while children are outside or crossing the street, the speed limit is 25 mph unless otherwise posted (and it’s ALWAYS 25 mph on most all
Rossmoor streets, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – and speed enforcement is happening in Rossmoor).
Always drive slowly and carefully near schools, playgrounds, parks, and residential areas because children may suddenly run into the street. Also, many children have not yet developed the ability to judge speeds and distances well enough to cross streets safely when cars
are moving fast.
School Buses Look out for stopped school buses. Some school buses flash yellow lights when preparing to stop to let the children out. The yellow flashing lights warn you to slow down and prepare to stop. When the bus flashes red lights, you must stop from either direction until the
children are safely across the street and the lights stop flashing. The law requires you to remain stopped as long as the red lights are flashing (CVC 22454). If you fail to stop, you may be fined up to $1,000 and your driving privilege could be suspended for 1 year. If the school bus is on the other side of a divided or multi-lane highway, you do not need to stop (the only street in Rossmoor that qualifies as divided is Rossmoor
Way).

The developer for the LA Fitness project has appealed the Seal Beach Planning Commission's denial of the conditional use permit to the City Council.
The best estimate for when the Seal Beach City Council will hear the appeal is at their Monday 9/11
meeting. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. but if you want a seat inside, you'll want to arrive by 6:00 p.m.
What you can do now is to write to the Seal Beach City Council members and express your thoughts, support and or concerns for the project. It's important for them to know what impacts their
decision will have on your life, and the impacts on Rossmoor. Please do share with them. And talk with your Seal Beach friends to do the same. Coalition Against LA Fitness Project The non-profit Coalition Against LA Fitness (CALAF) is
raising funds to help represent the Rossmoor and Seal Beach residents and shoppers who frequent the Shops to be heard. To find out how you can help support CALAF, please see their website, Facebook group and Go Fund Me page.

I-405 Improvement Project |
As most of you know the I-405 enhancement project has begin with the preliminary ground and soil work. The I-405 in both directions from the I-605 to SR 73 interchange will have CalTrans crews working intermittently on the shoulders and neighboring streets. Some lane and complete freeway closures will take
place as well.
The OCTA has also released a projected schedule for the bridge work along the 16 mile project path. You can see that here. Note that none of the projected work will directly impact Rossmoor or Seal Beach Blvd. However, if you plan to drive between here and SR 73 in Costa Mesa, especially in the late night and early morning hours, you may want to check for
closures on the OCTA website.
We will provide updates here as they become available.
Once the project is completed in about 2023, there will be one
additional traffic lane in each direction. The current HOV lane and an additional lane will be Toll Lanes for vehicles with less than 3 riders.

Talk meeting at Rush Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30. That is unless it's raining, then there's no walk.
NEW WALK ADDED! Thursdays at 4:00 p.m. at Rush Park, there is a new group of
walkers. Plan to join them next Thursday to walk and talk

If you need a topic to talk about, Bernie will be happy to help you out. It's a real Win-Win Bernie's idea creates an informal way to meet your neighbors and get some exercise at the same time. It could save or at least extend your life, plus you'll get to meet some really
great people. And that is a huge win-win. Come join us! The Rossmoor Walk & Talk is open to all ages. The more the merrier - Invite your friends and please spread the word. Rossmoor Walk & Talk meets are held every Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Rush Park. If you have questions, please email Bernie
(BernieB_90720@yahoo.com), or come see him on Tuesdays at 10:30 at Rush Park. Bernie will be the energetic guy with glasses, short hair, long in years and walking slowly.

Coyote sightings in Rossmoor have decreased to almost zero over the past couple of months. The coyote gates are down and that is a big help. Other easier food sources seem to be available to the local coyotes as well. Unfortunately, reduced sightings/reports does
not indicate the coyotes are not in Rossmoor. They are still here.
For those of you who have made reports, THANK YOU. You are helping us track coyote behavior which is critical to any future removal attempts.
Please
continue to be careful with your pets (keep them indoors or within your sight, and DO NOT leave pet food outside after feeding time).
Our
Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program continues to collect reports and monitors coyote behavior and movement based on these reports. Please continue to report any coyote activity you see on the Rossmoor Wildlife Watch website.
If you would like to find out
more about our Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program and discover what we are doing, please sign up for more information.
The coyote challenge we face here in Rossmoor and throughout Southern California does not have a magical "fix it" solution. It will take a community effort (that's you and me, not
"them") to keep our pets safe and reduce the risks in our neighborhood. Please learn what you can do at your home and for everyone in Rossmoor.
