[rha] Blue Angles & Snow Birds flying, Counterfeit Bills, Recycling

Published: Mon, 09/25/17

Hi

As promised, it got much warmer than last week, hitting 90 here in Rossmoor today. We should be in the 80's through next weekend before things cool off next week.

It is great flying weather, just in time for both the U.S. Navy Blue Angles and the Canadian Snow Birds to be flying locally. Both precision flying teams will be based at the Los Alamitos Reserve Base for the week in preparation for the Huntington Beach Airshow next Saturday and Sunday. There will be practice flights all week during airfield hours. so, if you hear what sounds like a jet taking off or landing toward the east, you are exactly right. Unfortunately, there are no public shows planned for either group outside of the airshow.

Counterfeit Bills
Also, there have been reports of counterfeit bills ($100 demonination) being used at Rossmoor garage sales over the weekend. The Sheriff's Department has been informed as well. If you are selling items at your home, be sure to check the bills. Here are some helpful tips on discovering fake bills.

LA Seismic Project is Back On
LA Seismic has resumed their survey project in Rossmoor including surveying and pre-digging for future placement of sensors in parkways. The work will take place during regular working hours. Questions and concerns may be directed to LA Seismic, LLC, Tracy L. Farmer,(Cell: 562-208-2922, Email: tfarmer@laseismic.com).

The LA Seismic website is located here. You can review their presentation slides here from the 9/12 RCSD meeting here or watch Mr. Farmer's presentation here (Mr. Farmer's presentation begins at about the 2 minute mark and lasts about 25 minutes).

RHA Meeting Update
Thanks to Lt. Jared Perry and motor Officer Larocchia from the Westminster CHP for coming to our September 19th meeting. They discuss their traffic enforcement focus along with the incidents in Rossmoor over the past year. There were some informative discussions with the Board and community. Thanks to everyone who participated.

Our October guest is the LAUSD Superintendent Dr. Sherry Kropp. Dr. Kropp will update us on the "State of the District" and answer from the Board and community. The meeting will start at
7:00 p.m. at Rossmoor Park on Tuesday October 17. Last year we had an overflow group to hear the district update from Dr. Kropp, and we would not be surprised if we overflow the room again this year. Plan to arrive early if you want a seat.

405 Improvement Project Update
The OCTA will provide an update on the 405 Improvement project at the October 10 RCSD meeting at Rush Park. Please plan to attend and get the latest project updates and ask your questions about the project and the lane changes it will create.

Rossmoor Recycles - Saturday 9/30
Our Rossmoor Recycles event is coming up in a couple of weeks on Saturday 9/30. Please remember to arrive between 8:00 a.m. and noon and bring your cans, plastic bottles, newspapers, and cardboard to Rush Park.

Get Ready to ShakeOut - Thursday 10/19
The Great ShakeOut is coming! This educational event will help prepare you and your family for the next big Southern California earthquake. The best part is that you "attend" right where you are on 10/19 at 10:19 AM. Just like when a quake occurs, you could be anywhere. So at 10:19 on 10/19, simply drop cover and hold on. See the video here and add your name to the ShakeOut participation list.

ShakeOut on 10/19 at 10:19 a.m.

Millions of people worldwide will practice how to Drop, Cover, and Hold On at 10:19 a.m. on October 19 during Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills.

These practice drills began in California in 2008 and are now used around the world to help educate and prepare people for earthquakes. ShakeOut is also a major activity of America's PrepareAthon!

The RHA participates in ShakeOut events and encourages you and your family to take a few moments on 10/19 at 10:19 a.m. to do the same.

Review the short video on the simple Drop, Cover, and Hold On process today. It could save you from injury or even save your life when the next big earthquake comes to Southern California.

I-405 Improvement Project
As most of you know the I-405 enhancement project has begin with the preliminary ground and soil work. The I-405 in both directions from the I-605 to SR 73 interchange will have CalTrans crews working intermittently on the shoulders and neighboring streets. Some lane and complete freeway closures will take place as well.

The OCTA has also released a projected schedule for the bridge work along the 16 mile project path. You can see that here. Note that none of the projected work will directly impact Rossmoor or Seal Beach Blvd. However, if you plan to drive between here and SR 73 in Costa Mesa, especially in the late night and early morning hours, you may want to check for closures on the OCTA website.

We will provide updates here as they become available.

Once the project is completed in about 2023, there will be one additional traffic lane in each direction. The current HOV lane and an additional lane will be Toll Lanes for vehicles with less than 3 riders.

Rossmoor Walk & Talk

Rossmoor residents Bernie Beskind & Herb Halling coordinates the weekly Rossmoor Walk & Talk  meeting at Rush Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30. That is unless it's raining, then there's no walk.

NEW WALK ADDED!
Thursdays at 4:00 p.m. at Rush Park, there is a new group of walkers. Plan to join them next Thursday to walk and talk

The program is simple enough, whoever attends forms groups of 2-4 people and walk around Rush Park and they talk. How long they walk, how fast they walk, and what they talk about is up to them. If you need a topic to talk about, Bernie will be happy to help you out.

It's a real Win-Win
Bernie's idea creates an informal way to meet your neighbors and get some exercise at the same time. It could save or at least extend your life, plus you'll get to meet some really great people. And that is a huge win-win.

Come join us! The Rossmoor Walk & Talk is open to all ages.

The more the merrier - Invite your friends and please spread the word. Rossmoor Walk & Talk meets are held every Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Rush Park.

If you have questions, please email Bernie (BernieB_90720@yahoo.com), or come see him on Tuesdays at 10:30 at Rush Park. Bernie will be the energetic guy with glasses, short hair, long in years and walking slowly.

Rossmoor Wildlife Watch
Coyotes in Rossmoor

Coyote sightings in Rossmoor have decreased to almost zero over the past couple of months. The coyote gates are down and that is a big help. Other easier food sources seem to be available to the local coyotes as well. Unfortunately, reduced sightings/reports does not indicate the coyotes are not in Rossmoor. They are still here.

For those of you who have made reports, THANK YOU. You are helping us track coyote behavior which is critical to any future removal attempts.

Please continue to be careful with your pets (keep them indoors or within your sight, and DO NOT leave pet food outside after feeding time).

Our Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program continues to collect reports and monitors coyote behavior and movement based on these reports. Please continue to report any coyote activity you see on the Rossmoor Wildlife Watch website.

If you would like to find out more about our Rossmoor Wildlife Watch program and discover what we are doing, please
sign up for more information.

Please report any coyote sightings here: RossmoorWildlife.org/report

The coyote challenge we face here in Rossmoor and throughout Southern California does not have a magical "fix it" solution. It will take a community effort (that's you and me, not "them") to keep our pets safe and reduce the risks in our neighborhood. Please learn what you can do at your home and for everyone in Rossmoor.

Because Rossmoor Matters

Great question, glad you asked.
